Monaco Yacht Show 2026: Inside the €4.5 Billion Superyacht Market

by Ahmad Mujataba

in Luxury Living

The Monaco Yacht Show returned to Port Hercule from September 23 to 26, 2026, bringing together 118 superyachts, 560 exhibitors and 30,678 visitors. The fleet on display had an estimated combined value of €4.5 billion, offering a snapshot of an industry shaped by expensive new builds, international buyers and growing interest in yacht refits.

The 35th edition was more than a showcase of luxury vessels. It brought shipyards, designers, brokers, equipment suppliers and prospective buyers together at a time when access to new-build capacity remains an important consideration for the superyacht market.

According to the show’s official post-show report, 50 of the 118 yachts on display were delivered in 2026. The fleet averaged 47.5 metres in length, with the largest vessel measuring 111 metres.

These figures illustrate the scale of capital involved in the sector. However, the value of yachts exhibited at an industry event should not be confused with annual sales, investment returns or the value of the entire global fleet.

A Market Built Around High-Value Assets

The superyacht industry extends well beyond yacht ownership. Construction, engineering, design, maintenance, brokerage, chartering and specialist services all contribute to its economic activity.

The Monaco Yacht Show cited a Deloitte study prepared for the Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss) and the Superyacht Life Foundation, which estimates that the industry generates €54 billion annually across these activities.

For buyers, a superyacht represents a substantial financial commitment. The purchase price is only one part of the equation: crew, maintenance, insurance, fuel, docking and refit work can add significant ongoing expenses.

This is why high-value yacht ownership requires a different approach from investing in conventional financial assets. Owners need to consider how they intend to use the vessel, how long they plan to keep it and what costs they can sustain over its useful life.

Our overview of superyacht market trends in 2026 examines how ownership decisions increasingly involve operational efficiency, technology, sustainability and long-term planning.

New Deliveries and Limited Shipyard Capacity

Oceanco's 111-metre superyacht Leviathan at sea.

Several major vessels attracted attention at this year’s show.

Oceanco’s 111-metre Leviathan, delivered in late 2025, made its Monaco debut. Lürssen presented Nixie, measuring 102.4 metres, as a world premiere and the largest 2026 delivery on display. Turquoise Yachts also unveiled Angelique, an 88-metre vessel described by the show organisers as the largest yacht ever built in Turkey by volume.

Other notable presentations included Pangea, the first Amels 80 shown at a yacht show, and Silver Fox, Sanlorenzo’s largest yacht to date.

These launches demonstrate the engineering and resources required to build vessels of this scale. They also highlight the importance of timing when buyers commission custom yachts.

According to the show’s account of BOAT International’s Global Order Book 2026, the number of superyacht projects under construction fell for a second consecutive year, while average yacht length and tonnage reached record levels. Leading shipyards had build slots committed through 2028 and 2029.

For prospective owners, limited availability can make a new commission a long-term project. Buyers must weigh the advantages of designing a yacht to their own specifications against the time required for construction. Existing yachts available through brokerage offer another route, although their condition, layout and maintenance history require careful assessment.

Brokerage, Sales and Buyer Demand

The show included both newly delivered vessels and yachts offered through brokerage and charter companies.

According to BOATPro figures cited by the organisers, superyacht sales exceeded €4 billion in the first half of 2026, compared with €3.61 billion during the same period in 2025.

The comparison points to stronger reported sales activity during the first half of the year. It does not, by itself, establish that every segment of the market is growing or that yacht values will continue to rise.

The event’s buyer programme also showed the importance of connecting sellers with qualified prospective clients. Exhibitors invited 13,368 private guests, while the organisers pre-qualified 648 visitors with a yacht project. The Prestige VIP Programme supported 56 clients and arranged 85 yacht visits.

These activities reflect the role of specialist events in bringing together buyers, brokers, shipyards and advisers. For high-value transactions, direct access to technical information, vessel inspections and experienced professionals can be an important part of the decision-making process.

For wealthy families considering yachts alongside other substantial purchases, investing in luxury assets requires a clear distinction between personal enjoyment and financial performance.

Refit Becomes an Important Alternative

New construction was not the only story at Port Hercule. Fifteen yachts on display had undergone refits during the previous three years, according to the organisers.

A refit can involve updating interiors, replacing equipment, improving systems or adapting a vessel to new requirements. Depending on the yacht’s condition and the owner’s objectives, upgrading an existing vessel may be preferable to waiting several years for a new build.

The show organisers estimate the refit market at between $3 billion and $5 billion annually, with estimated annual growth of 6% to 9%. These are industry estimates rather than guaranteed forecasts.

The sector will receive a dedicated event in Monaco with the launch of The Future of Refit, scheduled for March 31 to April 2, 2027, at the Grimaldi Forum, alongside an on-water display at the Yacht Club de Monaco.

For owners, refit decisions still require careful budgeting. Work can uncover additional technical issues, and extensive upgrades do not necessarily translate into an equivalent increase in resale value. An independent survey and a realistic cost assessment are therefore important before committing to a project.

Sustainability and the Cost of Ownership

Environmental considerations also featured at the 2026 show. The second Blue Wake Awards recognised solutions assessed by the Water Revolution Foundation, with five category winners selected from 60 validated solutions. A separate yacht prize went to Simena, a 62-metre sailing yacht combining a ketch rig with hybrid propulsion.

The show also highlighted Dagger, Benetti’s hybrid B.Now 67M, in connection with the Yacht Club de Monaco’s SEA Index, which assesses and compares yacht CO₂ emissions.

These initiatives indicate growing attention to environmental performance across parts of the industry. They do not mean that all hybrid systems deliver the same results or that a yacht’s environmental impact can be judged by propulsion technology alone. Vessel size, operating patterns, fuel consumption and onboard systems also matter.

For owners, technology and efficiency may influence operating decisions, but the financial case for any upgrade should be evaluated individually. Purchase price, maintenance requirements, expected use and future resale demand remain important considerations.

During the show, the organisers also presented a €55,000 donation to the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, continuing a partnership that began in 2010.

What the Show Means for Wealthy Buyers

Superyachts occupy an unusual position among high-value assets. They can provide private travel, accommodation and leisure, but ownership also brings substantial recurring costs and complex operational responsibilities.

Unlike listed shares or bonds, yachts cannot generally be sold quickly at a transparent market price. Values depend on factors such as the builder, model, age, condition, maintenance records, specification and buyer demand. Customisation can make a vessel more suitable for its owner while limiting its appeal to other buyers.

Chartering may help offset some operating expenses, but income depends on availability, demand, management arrangements and costs. It should not be treated as a guaranteed return.

Families incorporating yachts into broader wealth strategies should also consider ownership structures, insurance, succession arrangements and the tax and regulatory rules in relevant jurisdictions. Professional advice can help establish how a yacht fits within the family’s wider financial commitments and long-term plans.

Looking Ahead to 2027

The Monaco Yacht Show will return to Port Hercule from September 22 to 25, 2027. The organisers also announced the first Red Sea Yacht Show, scheduled for October 14–17, 2027, at Jeddah Yacht Club & Marina.

The 2026 edition offered a clear view of an industry operating at the intersection of craftsmanship, international trade, luxury consumption and significant capital expenditure. New deliveries attracted attention, while brokerage activity and refit options demonstrated that buyers have several routes into the market.

For prospective owners, the central question is not simply which yacht is the largest or newest. It is whether the vessel’s price, running costs, intended use and future resale prospects make sense for their circumstances.

The show provided access to an exceptional concentration of yachts and industry expertise. The decisions that follow, however, depend on careful evaluation rather than spectacle alone.
