Set against the timeless charm of one of the Hamptons’ most treasured landmarks, the annual Halsey House Gala hosted by the Southampton History Museum offered a refined and meaningful tribute to America’s approaching 250th anniversary. Held at the historic Halsey House & Garden in Southampton, the evening brought together distinguished guests, philanthropists, and cultural leaders for a celebration that bridged centuries of American heritage.

A Historic Setting with Deep Roots

The gala unfolded on the grounds of Southampton’s oldest dwelling, a site that predates the founding of the United States. This remarkable setting provided more than a picturesque backdrop. It offered a living connection to colonial America and the early days of Southampton life. Guests were immersed in an atmosphere where history felt tangible, reinforcing the significance of the upcoming national milestone marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The evening was not only a celebration of the past but also a reaffirmation of the importance of preserving history for future generations. The museum’s carefully maintained properties and collections continue to serve as cultural anchors within the community.

Leadership and Distinguished Guests

The gala was co-chaired by philanthropists Jean Shafiroff and Mary Slattery, both widely recognized for their commitment to charitable causes and cultural preservation. Their leadership ensured an evening that was both elegant and purposeful.

Serving as emcee, Bill McCuddy guided the program with charm and wit, maintaining a lively yet sophisticated tone throughout the night.

The guest list reflected the gala’s prominence within the Hamptons social and philanthropic calendar. Notable attendees included Rebecca Seawright, Steven Stolman, and artist Hunt Slonem, along with a wide circle of patrons, collectors, and community figures who gathered in support of the museum’s mission.

Philanthropy and Cultural Stewardship

At its core, the Halsey House Gala is a fundraising initiative that supports the Southampton History Museum’s ongoing efforts to preserve and interpret the region’s rich heritage. Proceeds from the evening contribute to the maintenance of historic sites, the expansion of archival collections, and the development of educational programming designed to engage diverse audiences.

The museum plays a critical role in safeguarding the cultural narrative of Southampton and the broader East End. Through exhibitions, public programs, and community outreach, it ensures that local history remains accessible, relevant, and inspiring.

A Lively Auction and Generous Contributions

One of the evening’s highlights was the live auction, which drew enthusiastic participation from guests. Among the standout items were exquisite glassware from Asprey and an original artwork by Hunt Slonem. Both pieces attracted strong bidding, reflecting the generosity and engagement of attendees.

These contributions underscore the vital role that private philanthropy plays in sustaining cultural institutions. The success of the auction demonstrated a shared commitment among guests to support the preservation of history and the continuation of educational initiatives.

Recognizing Key Supporters

The 2026 gala was made possible through the generous support of numerous benefactors across multiple giving levels. Platinum supporters included Fiona and Stan Druckenmiller, The Derfner Foundation, Jean and Martin Shafiroff, and the M. Sullivan Fund, honoring the memory of Marge Sullivan.

Gold supporters featured Susan K. Allen, George and Leslie Biddle, Ann Marie Carr, Judi and Kevin Donnelly, Southampton Inn, and Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. Silver and Bronze supporters included a wide network of individuals, foundations, and local businesses whose contributions collectively ensured the success of the event.

This strong base of support reflects the deep connection between the museum and its community, as well as a shared recognition of the importance of preserving local history.

Looking Ahead to America 250

As the United States prepares to commemorate its 250th anniversary, events like the Halsey House Gala take on added significance. They serve as reminders of the nation’s origins while encouraging reflection on its ongoing story.

The Southampton History Museum stands at the forefront of this effort within its region, offering a platform for education, dialogue, and cultural appreciation. By hosting events that celebrate both local and national history, the museum reinforces the enduring relevance of the past in shaping the present and future.
