Tips when expanding your business to new countries

by Simon Powers
July 20, 2026
in Business

When you run a business, one of your primary goals is likely to be growth. Expanding into new markets or new countries can open the door to increased revenue, a broader customer base, and greater brand recognition (just think of McDonald’s, no matter where you are, you always see the M and recognise it instantly). The additional income generated through expansion can then be reinvested into your business, allowing you to develop new products or services, strengthen your team, and continue growing sustainably.

However, entering a new market isn’t as simple as replicating what has worked at home. Every country has its own consumer behaviours, regulations, and business landscape, meaning careful planning is essential. By taking the time to research your target market, understand local requirements, and adapt your approach, you can minimize risks and give your international expansion the best possible chance of success.

From learning more about how your finances will operate (for example, you may need to send money from the USA to India, if your expansion is in India), to ensuring you deliver excellent customer service, below are three tips when expanding your business to new countries.

Deliver excellent customer services

No matter where your customers are based, excellent customer service should remain a top priority. Make sure you understand local expectations around communication, response times, and support channels. If you’re operating in a country where another language is spoken, consider offering multilingual customer support to create a better experience and build trust with your audience. Customer service is one part of the business that, if done badly, can quickly lead to your business failing in the new area.

Start small, then expand

Rather than launching across several countries at once, focus on one market first. This allows you to test demand, refine your operations, and identify any challenges before investing further. Once you’ve established a successful model, you can use what you’ve learned to expand into additional markets with greater confidence. There is a risk that if you start too big and you get the market wrong, because it’s different from your home market, you could lose money and have to make drastic changes.

Monitor performance closely

International expansion should be continually reviewed to ensure your strategy is delivering results. Track key metrics such as sales, customer acquisition costs, website traffic, conversion rates, and customer feedback. Monitoring your performance allows you to make informed decisions, optimize your approach, and identify new growth opportunities. When monitoring performance, don’t forget to monitor the operational costs that are coming out due to your expansion, for example, always keep an eye on international money transfers to ensure you are getting the best rates.

What countries are you planning on expanding into, and what plans have you put in place already to help you succeed? Which of the above tips is most important? Is there anything missing from our guide that you would like to share? Let us know in the comment box below. We look forward to hearing from you.
