Smash Bash Returns to The Pierre, Uniting a Century of Tennis and New York Glamour

by Hillary Latos

in Events

When The Pierre, A Taj Hotel, New York first opened its doors overlooking Central Park in 1930, the city sat at the center of a landmark year in tennis. Bill Tilden and Helen Wills Moody triumphed at Wimbledon that season, while the U.S. National Championships at Forest Hills produced a dramatic men’s final in which John Doeg defeated Frank Shields after a deciding set that stretched to thirty games. It was also the dawn of a new transatlantic era, shaped by figures such as Clark Gable and Jean Harlow, while Coco Chanel’s decision to make The Pierre her New York home in 1932 further cemented the hotel’s place at the heart of fashion, culture, and society.

Nearly a century later, Smash Bash at The Pierre unites these two legacies, tennis and timeless New York glamour, for a new generation.

A Late Summer Tradition

On Thursday, August 27, the ever popular annual event will once again bring the excitement of the US Open to one of Manhattan’s most storied hotels, combining leading tennis talent with elevated food, cocktails, and the allure of New York’s late summer social season.

This year’s Smash Bash will feature Alexander Bublik, the Kazakhstani World Top 10 player, and Anastasia Potapova, the professional, former Junior World No. 1, and 2016 Wimbledon Girls’ Singles Champion. The New York Observer will serve as the event’s official media sponsor.

From 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, guests will enjoy tennis inspired culinary stations, a premium wine bar, and signature cocktails. They will also have the opportunity to challenge the players to table tennis and win signed memorabilia.

A Storied Lineup

Smash Bash has carved out its own place in The Pierre’s modern history. The event debuted in 2017 with Wimbledon champion Garbiñe Muguruza, who returned to host again the following year. In 2019, Muguruza was joined by Dominic Thiem, while two time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitová headlined the 2023 celebration. Alexander Bublik and Dayana Yastremska carried the tradition forward in 2025, with Bublik now returning to the lineup this year.

Ultimate Tennis Season Experience

Set beside Central Park with easy access to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, The Pierre offers a natural base for visitors hoping to take in the on court action and the citywide excitement surrounding it.

For the first time, the hotel is introducing an exclusive package tailored to travelers in New York for the competition. The Ultimate Tennis Season Experience includes up to 20 percent savings on stays of three nights or more, daily breakfast for two at Perrine, a $100 hotel credit for Perrine or Two E Bar and Lounge, a personalized tennis inspired welcome amenity and limited edition Pierre keepsake, dedicated Les Clefs d’Or concierge services, preferred tournament ticket procurement assistance and luxury transportation to the matches available upon request and at an additional cost, and the opportunity to purchase access to Smash Bash at The Pierre NYC.

Guests staying at The Pierre can also look forward to appearances by leading personalities and special guests, along with the chance to meet athletes, tastemakers, members of the media, influencers, and VIPs. Live entertainment, signature cocktails, and light bites will round out the program at Two E Bar and Lounge for an additional charge.

A Bridge Between Fans and the Game

“Smash Bash has become a cornerstone of the New York tennis calendar, providing a unique bridge between the fans and the game’s biggest personalities,” said Spiridon Sarantopoulos, Senior Vice President, Operations, USA and Europe, IHCL. “By introducing a dedicated luxury stay package, we are offering an even more immersive way to experience the glamour of the tournament through the lens of Taj hospitality.”

Tickets and Details

Tickets for Smash Bash at The Pierre NYC are priced at $175++ and can be purchased online, by calling Perrine Pierre at 212-940-8185, by emailing thepierrefb.ny@tajhotels.com, or by visiting perrinenyc.com. Places are limited and tickets are expected to sell out quickly.
