Finding Your Purpose and Position: Leadership Lessons from the Association of Related Churches

by Allen Brown
in Career, Culture

Success is often associated with hard work, persistence, and determination. While those qualities certainly matter, many leaders eventually discover that effort alone does not guarantee results. With 25 years of experience in the leadership space, the Association of Related Churches has seen how timing, preparation, relationships, and opportunity all play a significant role in shaping outcomes.

For pastors, church planters, business leaders, and professionals alike, one question frequently emerges: How do people find the place where their gifts, opportunities, and purpose align?

The answer may have less to do with chasing the next opportunity and more to do with understanding preparation, positioning, and long-term growth.

Why Preparation Matters More Than Most People Realize

Modern culture tends to celebrate visible success while overlooking the years of preparation that precede it.

Whether someone is launching a church, starting a business, leading a team, or pursuing a new career path, there is a hidden season where skills are developed, character is shaped, and experience is gained. These seasons may feel slow or unremarkable at the time, yet they become the foundation for future opportunities.

The Association of Related Churches has long emphasized leadership development as a core component of church planting. Through coaching, training, and mentoring, ARC encourages leaders to view preparation as an investment rather than an obstacle.

Many of the most effective leaders understand that readiness creates opportunities. When preparation and opportunity eventually meet, growth accelerates.

The Importance of Being Properly Positioned

Preparation alone is only part of the equation.

Many people have talent, knowledge, and experience. The challenge is finding the environment where those strengths can be applied effectively.

Positioning involves identifying the place where skills, values, relationships, and opportunities naturally align. For some leaders, that may mean launching a church in a specific city. For others, it may involve stepping into a new role, joining a team, or pursuing a vision that aligns with their strengths.

The Association of Related Churches has helped launch more than 1,200 churches globally, and one common theme among successful church planters is intentional placement. Church planting is rarely about finding simply any location. It involves identifying communities where leaders can make a meaningful and lasting impact.

Why Timing Can Change Everything

There are moments in life when preparation and opportunity seem to converge.

A conversation leads to a partnership. A leadership opportunity appears at the right moment. A long-held vision suddenly gains momentum. What may appear to be luck from the outside is the result of years of unseen preparation meeting the right opportunity.

Leadership experts refer to these moments as breakthrough seasons. In ministry settings, some describe them as moments of divine timing.

The Association of Related Churches encourages leaders to remain faithful during slower seasons because growth happens before visible results appear. Leaders who stay committed during seasons of preparation are better equipped to maximize opportunities when they arrive.

The Connection Between Purpose and Impact

Many people pursue success without first defining purpose.

While achievement can be motivating, long-term fulfillment is connected to something deeper. Leaders who understand why they do what they do are better equipped to navigate challenges, setbacks, and uncertainty.

Purpose provides direction. It creates clarity during difficult seasons and helps leaders make decisions that align with their values.

Within the Association of Related Churches, this principle is reflected in the organization’s mission to help pastors and church planters reach people with the message of Jesus. While strategies and methods may evolve over time, the underlying purpose remains consistent.

When individuals operate from a clear sense of purpose, their influence extends beyond personal achievement. Teams become stronger, communities benefit, and organizations become more effective.

How Relationships Help Leaders Find Their Place

One of the most overlooked aspects of leadership development is the role of relationships.

Few leaders achieve meaningful success entirely on their own. Mentors, coaches, peers, and trusted advisors provide perspective that helps individuals navigate major decisions.

The Association of Related Churches places a strong emphasis on relationships because leadership can become isolating. Through conferences, coaching opportunities, and church planting networks, leaders gain access to people who can provide guidance, encouragement, and accountability.

These relationships help leaders identify opportunities they may not have recognized on their own. They also provide support during challenging seasons when uncertainty or discouragement can make it difficult to maintain momentum.

Strong relationships don’t eliminate challenges, but they can make those challenges easier to navigate.

Creating Space for Growth and Opportunity

Finding the right place at the right time is the outcome of preparation, intentional development, meaningful relationships, and a willingness to remain faithful through seasons of uncertainty. Leaders who focus exclusively on immediate results may miss opportunities to build the foundation necessary for long-term success.

The Association of Related Churches continues to invest in developing leaders because sustainable growth requires more than ambition. It requires preparation, clarity, and environments where people can thrive.

For many leaders, the most significant breakthroughs occur when preparation, purpose, opportunity, and timing finally come together. Those moments may not happen overnight, but they become the turning points that shape the future.

About the Association of Related Churches

The Association of Related Churches (ARC) is a cooperative network of independent churches from various denominations, backgrounds, and ministry networks. Since its founding, the Association of Related Churches has helped launch more than 1,200 churches worldwide and continues to serve leaders committed to building healthy, life-giving churches.
