Does Riding an Ebike Feel Awkward? A More Bike-Like Design Could Change That

by Allen Brown

You stop at a traffic light next to a rider on a traditional bicycle. Their bikes are slim and simple. Yours has a thick frame, a large battery, several visible cables, and a motor that makes its presence known every time you accelerate.

Even if you enjoy the ride, there can be a small moment of self-consciousness. Does the bike look too bulky? Do other cyclists think you are taking the easy way out? Is everyone noticing that you are riding an ebike? These concerns are not always discussed in electric bike reviews, which tend to focus on range, power, and speed. Yet for many people considering their first ebike, appearance and social comfort can be just as important.

Some riders want assistance without looking like they are operating a small electric vehicle. They want a bicycle that is easy to carry, simple to charge, quiet on the road, and visually close to the traditional bikes they already know.

That is where a new generation of  more discreet and lightweight electric bikes is starting to change the experience.

Why Some Ebikes Feel Too Obvious

Many electric bikes are noticeably larger and heavier than traditional bicycles, with thick frames, visible wiring, large batteries, and oversized components. While these features can serve a purpose, they may feel unnecessary for riders who simply want a little help with hills or an easier trip around town.

The bulkier design can also attract more attention when parked, while the extra weight makes carrying an ebike into an apartment difficult. If the battery is not removable, even charging can become inconvenient.

For some riders, these practical issues make an ebike feel more complicated than the transportation problem it was supposed to solve.

The Social Stigma Around “Taking the Easy Way”

There is also a more personal kind of discomfort. Some riders worry that using electric assistance will be seen as cheating. They may want to arrive at work without sweating, travel farther on the weekend, or make a hilly route more manageable. Those are practical reasons to choose an ebike, but riders can still feel pressure to explain why they need assistance.

The assumption that every bike ride must be a test of physical effort misses the point. People use bicycles for many reasons, including transportation, recreation, fitness, and simple enjoyment. Electric assistance does not remove pedaling or make the rider passive. It gives the rider more control over how demanding the trip will be.

Still, design can influence how that experience feels. When an electric bike is heavy, noisy, and visually dominated by its electrical components, the assistance becomes the main story. The ideal result is a bicycle that happens to offer assistance when needed.

Velotric Tempo: An Ebike That Looks and Feels Like a Regular Bike

The Velotric Tempo was designed around this more understated approach. It provides electric assistance without allowing the electrical system to dominate the appearance or riding experience.

At 39 pounds with the battery installed, Tempo is considerably lighter than many full-size electric bikes. Removing the battery reduces the bike’s weight to 34 pounds, making it easier to carry through an apartment building, lift onto a rack, or move through a narrow storage space.

Its frame retains a slim, classic bicycle silhouette rather than using oversized tubing. Concealed cabling reduces visual clutter, while tan-wall tires and an integrated rear light contribute to a clean, cohesive appearance. At first glance, it looks much closer to a modern city or gravel bike than a conventional bulky ebike.

That subtlety does not mean giving up useful assistance. Tempo uses a compact 350W hub motor with 45Nm of torque. The motor is designed to operate quietly, providing support without making every start or hill climb feel mechanically intrusive.

For riders who feel uncomfortable drawing attention to the fact that they are receiving assistance, the result can feel more natural. The bike still looks, handles, and pedals like a bicycle. The motor simply helps in the background.

A Removable Battery Makes Apartment Charging Easier

Charging is one of the most overlooked parts of ebike ownership. If a bike has to be stored in a garage, charging the entire bicycle may not be practical. Extension cords can create inconvenience, and some shared areas may not have accessible electrical outlets at all.

Tempo uses a lockable, removable battery, allowing riders to leave the bike in its storage location and bring only the battery inside. The battery can be charged in an apartment or office without requiring the entire bike to remain beside an outlet.

A Less Obvious Ebike Still Needs Theft Protection

Looking more like a traditional bicycle may help Tempo feel less conspicuous, but discreet styling should never replace proper security.

Tempo works with Apple Find My and Google’s Find Hub, giving owners a way to locate the bike through a compatible device ecosystem. NFC card unlocking provides another layer of access control, while the removable battery can be taken indoors when the bike is parked for an extended period.

Electric Assistance Does Not Have to Define the Ride

For many riders, an ebike is simply a way to remove one or two obstacles. It can make a steep hill less discouraging, prevent a commute from becoming exhausting, or extend a weekend ride by a few miles. The rider is still balancing, steering, pedaling, and choosing where to go.

There is nothing embarrassing about wanting a ride to be easier. But for anyone who still feels self-conscious about using an ebike, choosing one that looks and feels like a traditional bicycle may make that concern disappear surprisingly quickly.

The motor does not have to be the point of the ride. Sometimes it is simply what makes the ride possible.
