The Premium Entertainment Choice: Why Sophisticated Consumers Are Investing Their Time in Role-Playing Games

by Hillary Latos
in Entertainment

If you look at some of the premium co-working spaces in Manhattan, Mayfair or Singapore’s Marina Bay after 9 pm, you will notice the same sight. Overhead, senior associates, founders, and executives that have dined about 1 hour ago don’t want to get stuck mindlessly looking at their phones or scrolling through Twitter. Many are wearing headsets, and holding controllers, and are completely engaged in a multi-billion-dollar entertainment industry traffic jam. This type of role-playing game has become highly sought after by premium gaming companies.

The milestones achieved in the gaming movement are phenomenal. In its reach to game awards, Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 surpassed 15 million in sales and has maintained position in Steam’s top-sellers for the past 2 years. In June 2023, Final Fantasy XVI sold 3 million copies within its first week. In 2024, the Sega Yakuza follow-up, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, achieved the highest sales in its opening week. Atla’s Metaphor: ReFantazio, which released in Oct 2024, sold over 1 million copies in the first 24 hours. These games are classified as premium narrative RPGs and require players to devote between 40 to 100 hours of gameplay to complete.

What sets role-playing games apart from other forms of entertainment is their unique length. While a streaming show can take ten hours of watching, a movie is at most 2 hours, and a podcast episode is usually only about 45 minutes. Books give readers long, elaborate narratives, but most other forms of entertainment provide passive experiences. Role-playing games are immersive and active since they allow players to make decisions that ultimately change the outcome of the experience, including the story and the characters involved.

Because of this, the audience for role-playing games has changed tremendously over the years. According to the Entertainment Software Association, as of 2024, the average age of role-playing video game players in Western markets is over 35, with most of the increase in the 40 to 55 year age group. This age group consists of employed and well-paid individuals, which means they can afford entertainment that is intellectually stimulating and does not waste their time. This audience is a paying customer to premium news websites, cultural institutions, as well as buying role-playing games. This change in entertainment preferences to role-playing games is quite evident.

Role-playing games appeal to busy professionals as the gameplay can fit around their schedule. Modern games allow players to save at almost any point in the game, so they can play on their own time, take breaks for weeks, and split their playtime over several months. This makes RPGs a better fit for professional players than multiplayer games, which need a lot of practice to play well, or television shows that require binge-watching to keep up with the story. RPGs are designed with the time constraints of professional players in mind.

definitive RPG ranking guide are a good place to start for players interested in the current RPG renaissance. The current role-playing renaissance includes Western classics like ‘Witcher 3’ and ‘Baldur’s Gate 3’, Japanese classics like ‘Final Fantasy XVI’ and ‘Persona 5 Royal’, and hybrids like ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ and ‘Mass Effect Legendary Edition’. If you want to avoid wasting around 40 hours on a game you might not like, you should read some editorials from industry analysts. These editorials are helpful in showing you what games fit your preferences and how much time you want to spend on them.

In the past few years, there has been a creative rebirth in the Japanese RPG genre. Readers who are interested in this part of the industry can read comprehensive JRPG editorial resource that tracks rankings for franchises, analyzes game design, and provides historical context. The breadth of RPGs being produced from Japanese developers like Square Enix and Atlus through 2026 will continue to justify focused writing separate from the rest of the Japanese RPG industry.

The role playing renaissance is here to stay for the foreseeable future. Game studios are announcing multi-year project pipelines, and streaming services keep improving how they cater to the genre. For affluent professionals who have re-discovered the enjoyment of a hundred-hour narrative journey, role playing games are one of the few forms of entertainment where the time invested feels like time spent, truly worth it.`
