The common thread running through all four is volume and surface rather than silhouette — capes, metallic sheen, heavy embellishment and saturated colour all work by catching light and occupying space. Designers tend toward that register when the commercial climate favours occasion dressing over everyday wardrobe, since a cape or a beaded jacket is bought for a specific evening rather than worn weekly. It is also the kind of collection that photographs well, which matters more than it once did when a show’s reach is measured in images rather than attendance.
