Baccarat Salons Abroad: The Entry Rules Travelers Meet

A night in a casino salon still features on many luxury itineraries. In Macau, Singapore, Monaco and Las Vegas, the room is part theater and part architecture. Baccarat is the game most associated with those rooms, and it carries the money. Before the cards, though, there is a door, and each city guards it differently.

Thai-language guides such as this บาคาร่าออนไลน์ list show the game moving online for adults, where the law allows them. The phrase simply means online baccarat. Online gambling is prohibited in Thailand, and the list is not written for travelers reading here. This piece stays with the physical salons and the rules posted at their entrances.

Why Does Baccarat Dominate the Big Casino Cities?

Baccarat is a card game of pure chance in which players back the Banker hand, the Player hand or a tie. Nobody at the table makes a strategic decision once the bet is down. That simplicity suits large rooms, high limits and visitors who do not share a language.

Macau shows the scale. Gross gaming revenue reached about MOP247.4 billion (US$30.9 billion) in 2025, up 9.1% on 2024, according to figures from the city’s gaming regulator. Industry reporting put baccarat at roughly 85% of that total. In the fourth quarter alone, VIP baccarat took 30.7% of revenue and mass-market baccarat 54.9%.

Las Vegas feels the same pull. The Strip’s monthly win swings with a handful of high-stakes baccarat sessions. The Nevada Gaming Control Board release for August 2026 put Strip gaming win at $684.1 million. In January 2025, baccarat alone produced $214.3 million of Strip win, up 121% on the year before.

What Will You Need at the Door?

Entry rules are as much a part of trip planning as dinner reservations. Like the Vatican underground tour, a salon visit rewards a little advance planning:

  1. A passport. Foreign visitors are often asked for one, and Singapore’s casinos route foreigners through separate lanes.
  2. Proof of age. Macau and Singapore set the minimum at 21, as do Nevada casinos. Monaco admits adults from 18.
  3. Suitable dress. Evening dress codes are common in the grander rooms, especially in Monte-Carlo.
  4. No camera habit. Photography on gaming floors is widely restricted, so the phone stays in a pocket.
  5. A set amount, decided earlier. The budget should be fixed at the hotel, not at the table.

How Do These Cities Treat Their Own Residents?

Singapore is the clearest case. Citizens and permanent residents must pay an entry levy before they walk in, while foreign visitors do not. Under the entry levy rules set by Singapore’s Gambling Regulatory Authority, the charge is not a payment for gambling. It is not refunded either. Since April 2019 it has cost SGD 150 for 24 hours or SGD 3,000 for a year.

Monaco takes a stricter line with its own people. Monegasque citizens are barred from gambling in the principality’s casinos, a rule dating to the 19th century. The tables are, by design, for visitors. Those visitors show a passport or national ID at the door. The private rooms upstairs keep higher minimums and stricter dress expectations than the public floor.

Macau raised its minimum casino age from 18 to 21 in November 2012. Under-21s who enter face fines of MOP1,000 to MOP10,000, and operators face far larger penalties. Casinos there reported about 430,000 under-age refusals in 2017, mostly tourists.

How Do the Salons Compare at a Glance?

City Minimum age What visitors show Rule for local residents
Macau 21 Passport or travel permit Same age rule, strictly enforced
Singapore 21 Passport via foreigners’ lanes Citizens and PRs pay a levy
Monaco 18 Passport or national ID Citizens may not gamble
Las Vegas 21 Government photo ID No levy, standard age check

The rules change, so check the operator and regulator pages a week before travel. A suite booking, such as the renovated suites at a city hotel, is easy to amend. A refused entry at midnight is not.

How Should a Traveler Budget for a Salon Evening?

A salon visit is paid entertainment, like a concert ticket or a tasting menu. It is never a source of income, and the house always holds an edge. On standard rules, that edge is about 1.06% on Banker bets, 1.24% on Player bets and over 14% on a tie.

A few habits keep the evening in proportion:

  • Decide the amount before leaving the room and leave the cards in the safe.
  • Set a time limit as well as a money limit.
  • Treat losses as the cost of the evening, never as something to win back.
  • Skip the table entirely if you are tired, upset or drinking heavily.
  • Remember that loyalty perks are designed to keep you playing longer.

If gambling stops being fun, help is free. In the United States, the National Council on Problem Gambling runs 1-800-GAMBLER. International readers can turn to BeGambleAware, and Singapore’s National Council on Problem Gambling runs a helpline at 1800-6-668-668.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Foreign Visitors Pay Singapore’s Casino Entry Levy?

No. The levy applies to Singapore citizens and permanent residents. Foreign visitors enter through designated lanes and show a passport instead.

What Is the Minimum Age to Enter a Casino In Macau?

The minimum age is 21. Macau raised it from 18 in November 2012, and visitors who break the rule can be fined.

Can Monaco Residents Gamble at the Monte-Carlo Casino?

Monegasque citizens are barred from gambling in Monaco’s casinos. The rooms are open to adult visitors aged 18 and over with ID.

Does Choosing Banker Over Player Change the Odds Much?

Only slightly. Banker carries an edge of about 1.06% after commission and Player about 1.24%, so the house keeps an advantage either way.

Treating the Salon as Part of the Itinerary

The great salons of Macau, Singapore and Monaco are worth seeing for their architecture and their rituals. Seeing them well means knowing the door rules, carrying the right documents and fixing a budget in advance. Treated that way, an hour at the rail is a story to bring home, not a cost to recover. The view from the terrace afterward, whether over the harbor in Monaco or the bay in Singapore, is often the better memory anyway.
