The Real Cost of a Move: Storage, Resale, and Smarter Budgeting

by Simon Powers

A couple moving from a two-bedroom in Queens to a one-bedroom in Manhattan budgeted three thousand dollars for their move. They ended up spending closer to six, and the gap wasn’t the moving truck or the deposit. It was eleven months of storage fees for furniture they kept meaning to sell, plus a rushed last-minute unit rental when their closing date moved up two weeks with no warning. Nobody plans for that math ahead of time, and that’s exactly why it catches people off guard.

Moving budgets almost always focus on the obvious costs. Movers, boxes, maybe a deposit. The expensive part usually happens in the margins, in decisions made under time pressure that nobody accounted for in the spreadsheet.

Storage Costs More Than the Monthly Rate Suggests

The sticker price on a storage unit looks manageable in isolation. Eighty dollars a month sounds fine for a temporary gap between homes. The problem is that “temporary” quietly becomes six months, then a year, and the cumulative cost by month twelve is often more than the value of what’s actually being stored.

Finding self storage units in Brooklyn during a move is straightforward enough, availability isn’t usually the issue. The issue is that people rent storage as a way of avoiding a harder decision, whether to sell, donate, or keep something, and that avoidance gets expensive fast. A unit rented with a specific end date in mind, tied to an actual event like a renovation finishing or a lease starting, tends to get vacated on schedule. A unit rented vaguely, “until I figure it out,” tends to become a permanent line item nobody budgeted for.

Selling Before a Move Recovers Money That Otherwise Just Evaporates

Furniture, appliances, and household goods that won’t fit or won’t be needed in a new space have real resale value, and selling them before a move accomplishes two things simultaneously: it reduces what needs to be moved or stored, and it puts cash back into a budget that’s about to take a hit from deposits and moving costs.

This is where platform choice actually matters, and where a lot of sellers lose more money than they realize. Facebook Marketplace fees are generally lower than other platforms for local, in-person sales, since most peer-to-peer local transactions don’t involve payment processing fees at all. That makes it a strong option for bulky furniture that needs local pickup anyway, since shipping large items through other platforms adds cost and complexity that erases most of the profit. Smaller, easily shippable items sometimes do better elsewhere, where a larger buyer pool offsets the platform’s cut. Matching the item to the right platform, rather than defaulting to whichever app is already installed, changes the math meaningfully.

The Timeline Mismatch Between Selling and Moving Is Where Most Budgets Break

Here’s the pattern that trips people up constantly: they decide to sell items with three weeks left before a move, listing everything at once and hoping for quick sales. Buyers don’t always move that fast, and a sofa that would have sold easily with six weeks of lead time sits unsold with three, forcing a choice between a steep discount, last-minute storage, or just leaving it behind.

Starting the selling process a full two months before a confirmed move date avoids this squeeze almost entirely. That’s earlier than most people think to start, precisely because the move itself doesn’t feel real yet at that point. It’s worth starting anyway.

Moving Insurance and Damage Costs Get Skipped More Than They Should

Basic mover liability coverage, the kind included by default, typically covers a fraction of an item’s actual value if something breaks. People assume their belongings are protected because a mover mentioned insurance during the estimate call, without reading what that coverage actually amounts to. A cracked antique dresser covered at sixty cents per pound is not meaningfully covered at all.

Full-value protection costs more upfront but matters disproportionately for anything genuinely valuable or irreplaceable. This is a decision to make deliberately, not default into by assuming the standard policy covers what people generally picture when they hear the word insurance.

Building a Buffer for the Timeline Nobody Controls

Closing dates shift. Landlords change move-out deadlines. The apartment that was supposed to be ready on the first is ready on the fifteenth instead, and suddenly there’s a two-week gap nobody budgeted for, filled with unplanned storage costs or a short-term rental nobody wanted to pay for.

Building a buffer into a moving budget, even a modest one, for exactly this kind of schedule slippage saves the panic-driven decisions that tend to be the most expensive ones. The couple from Queens would have saved themselves real money with a plan that assumed something would shift, rather than one that assumed everything would go exactly as scheduled.
