Why Young Americans Are Flocking to Florida: Insights into Life in the Sunshine State

Sunshine State

Sunshine State

Despite its hurricanes, humidity, and alligators, Florida remains a magnet for Americans seeking affordability, space, and a laid-back lifestyle.

With the second-largest population growth in the U.S. from 2023 to 2024, Florida is the fastest-growing state, as per U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

The Sunshine State is becoming home to not just retirees but also an increasing number of young professionals and millennials.

The Growing Appeal of Florida

Florida’s reputation as a haven for retirees is well-established. With nearly 22% of its population aged 65 and older—compared to the national average of 17%—the state is synonymous with retirement living.

However, younger high-earning individuals are now making Florida their home.

A SmartAsset analysis revealed that in 2022, Florida experienced the largest net migration of millennial-headed households earning $200,000 or more annually, with nearly 1,800 families relocating to the state.

This influx of younger residents speaks to Florida’s evolving appeal beyond retirement.

For many, the state offers a chance to stretch their dollar, enjoy outdoor activities, and embrace a slower pace of life.

Living the Florida Dream: Stories from Young Residents

“I Have the Best of Both Worlds” – Liz White, Naples, FL
In 2021, Liz White moved from Philadelphia to Naples at age 31, opting for a unique lifestyle in her parents’ retirement community.

While her rent remained about $2,000 monthly, she gained more space—a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment. White described her experience as fulfilling, saying,

“I feel like everyone waits to retire by the beach, and I’m doing that while working a full-time job.”

While her community skews older, White has found friends her age.

“Young people here naturally gravitate towards one another,” she noted, adding that the slower pace and ease of living—such as ample parking—make Naples an attractive choice.

“My Money Goes a Long Way” – Brooklyn Karasack, St. Petersburg, FL
Originally from Pittsburgh, 27-year-old Brooklyn Karasack moved to Florida in 2019 and now calls St. Petersburg home.

With a $108,000 annual salary as an internal audit manager and supplemental income from selling handmade clothing, she has managed to purchase a condo and build a comfortable life.

“Florida offers me affordability without sacrificing fun,” she said, citing lower costs compared to friends living in cities like Denver and Chicago. Owning her home, attending music festivals, and indulging in creative pursuits like thrifting make her life uniquely fulfilling.

Career Growth in Tampa – Chabely Rodriguez
Chabely Rodriguez, a 29-year-old anesthesiologist assistant, relocated to Tampa and earned over $210,000 annually in 2023. She reflected on her transition, saying,

“I live a different life than I did in New York. I have more space, and my money goes a lot farther.”

The Challenges of Life in Florida

While Florida offers many advantages, it is not without drawbacks. Frequent hurricanes can pose financial and emotional strains, particularly for homeowners.

  • Hurricane Ian’s Impact on Naples: Liz White faced significant challenges when her condo flooded during Hurricane Ian in 2022. She temporarily relocated while renovations were completed, finding solace in her neighbors’ support.
  • Hurricane Milton’s Evacuation: In St. Petersburg, Karasack had to evacuate her home during Hurricane Milton in 2024. Although her property was undamaged, she admitted, “Being a homeowner during hurricanes is stressful. Sometimes I wish I were still renting.”

These weather-related risks contribute to Florida’s high home insurance costs, making it essential for prospective homeowners to plan accordingly.
