The Planner Shortage Starts With a Map Problem, and Arkad Institute Is Drawing One for Mid-Career Entrants

by Hillary Latos
in Career

Ask almost anyone running a wealth practice what limits growth and the answer is rarely clients. It is people. Experienced advisors are retiring, demand for planning keeps widening, and the obvious source of new talent is not new graduates but adults in their thirties and forties who already know how to manage relationships, budgets and difficult conversations.

Those mid-career entrants are often exactly who a family office or advisory firm wants in the room. They have run teams, sold complex products, or managed their own household finances through a few cycles. What they usually lack is a clear route into the credential that clients and employers now expect: the CFP certification.

Why talented career changers stall

The CFP path is not a single exam. It combines education coursework, the exam itself, an experience requirement and an ethics commitment. Each piece has its own rules and timing, and the order in which a candidate tackles them changes how quickly they become useful to an employer.

A former sales manager might finish coursework quickly but have no idea how to document qualifying experience. A former teacher might pass the exam and then discover that the experience clock barely started. Others try to pair the CFP with a securities license and end up studying for two credentials at once, finishing neither on schedule. None of these people lack ability. They lack a map.

Guidance before tuition

Arkad Institute was set up to answer that problem for adults moving into financial services. Rather than selling a course, it starts with an assessment of a person’s background, goals and prerequisites, then turns that into a written plan for the credential that fits. Its CFP certification path focuses on sequencing: when to start education coursework, when to sit the exam, and how to keep the experience requirement moving alongside a job.

The firm is careful about what it does not claim. It does not promise exam results, a license or a level of income. For a wealth audience that has seen its share of overpromising, that restraint is part of the appeal. The pitch is structure and honest timing, not shortcuts.

What firms can take from this

Practices that want to hire career changers can borrow the same logic. A few steps make the difference:

  • Hire for the map, not the finish line. A candidate with a realistic credential plan is often a better bet than one who has passed a single exam with no next step in sight.
  • Make the experience requirement visible. Spell out which roles in your firm count toward it so new hires can plan around it from day one.
  • Do not stack credentials by default. If a license is needed for the role, decide with the hire whether it comes before or after CFP coursework, rather than both at once.

The planning profession has always prized the ability to turn a messy financial life into an ordered set of decisions. It is fitting that the route into the profession benefits from the same treatment. The people who will advise the next generation of families are already in the workforce. Many of them simply need someone to show them the order of the steps.
