Security Lapses You Can’t Afford To Overlook In Your Warehouse

In many ways, warehouses are the mecca of company operations. This is where you’ll store the majority of your stock, and it’s also a work environment that likely houses some of the most high-priced equipment in your company.

Despite that, many businesses don’t apply the same tight security operations to warehouses as they do in, say, their office spaces. Yet, warehouse breaches are some of the most expensive you’ll face, and they’re often also the hardest to bounce back from.

In light of that, you’ll probably want to improve your warehouse security standing, and you can begin doing precisely that by addressing the following commonly overlooked warehouse security lapses.

# 1 – Unrestricted Access

Unrestricted warehouse access has its benefits. After all, third-party drivers may move in and out of this space all day long. Opening the floodgates can save you significantly on paperwork and other time-consuming processes. But, it’ll also make it incredibly hard to manage risks in your warehouse at large.

Restricting access is always preferable if you want to get on top of security, and there are plenty of things you can do to make this possible. For instance, you could install a keycard system that ensures only approved staff members can reach warehouse stockpiles. It’s also possible to incorporate more intensive approval processes for drivers, including checking credentials and fully logging every visit.

From a basic safety angle, this ensures you’re always aware of who’s present in your warehouse. For security, this increased oversight also ensures that, if stock does go missing, you have an immediate list of suspects and their details to begin working through.

# 2 – Equipment Malfunctions

Equipment malfunctions can open the floodgates for warehouse problems, especially if entire teams are aware of them. After all, whether you like it or not, a lot of warehouse theft comes from inside your company. That means there’s absolutely no room for unresolved equipment issues.

A regular maintenance schedule, including well-kept maintenance logs is your best form of defence here, as it significantly reduces the risk of equipment setbacks. Equally, it’s essential to act fast if equipment breaks. For instance, you’ll need to contact your security company immediately if cameras stop operating, and you should seek urgent commercial garage door repair if your shutters stop operating for any reason. This way, there’s far less risk of anyone taking advantage of these lapses.

# 3 – Camera Blind Spots

Sometimes, even fully functioning security equipment will fail to offer protection. For instance, camera blind spots are one of the worst causes of warehouse theft.  This is especially true if blind spots fall in high-traffic areas like dispatch zones.

Luckily, this is an easy enough problem to overcome, and it’s something you should prioritize while installing your security system. Working with an experienced security installation team should see your cameras positioned to provide full warehouse coverage. That way, you can immediately revise and investigate camera footage if theft becomes a problem.

Warehouse security lapses leave room for significant problems. Address these oversights to keep your warehouse safe at last.
