However, a beacon of hope emerged in the form of the People’s Fund of Maui, spearheaded by media moguls Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson. Their commitment to pledge $10 million towards wildfire relief efforts rallied support from around the world.
Vierra’s family, except one adult son, received timely assistance through direct payments from the People’s Fund. These monthly payments of $1,200 provided crucial support, allowing them to stay afloat amidst the chaos and uncertainty. Vierra expressed gratitude for the assistance, emphasizing how it helped them maintain stability during a tumultuous time.
The initiative, managed by the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF), garnered overwhelming support, raising nearly $60 million from over 20,000 donors. Randomised studies across multiple countries have consistently found that recipients of unconditional cash spend it on housing, food, school costs and transport, with no measurable increase in spending on alcohol or tobacco — a concern that drove decades of in-kind distribution instead. Cash also avoids the logistics and warehousing costs that absorb a share of donated goods programmes, and it lets a household address whatever its own particular obstacle happens to be, which an external agency rarely knows.
For Vierra and countless others, the support received from the People’s Fund has been instrumental in their journey towards recovery. However, challenges persist, with many still grappling with housing insecurity and mental health issues.
Recognizing the long-term impact of the wildfires, efforts are underway to provide sustainable solutions for displaced families. A $500 million commitment, announced by state and county governments along with various organizations, aims to build 3,000 housing units to accommodate displaced individuals for at least 18 months.
The Maui Recovery Effort, led by the Hawai’i Community Foundation, has been pivotal in coordinating relief efforts and providing crucial support to affected communities. Through their Maui Strong fund, which raised $189 million, they’ve spearheaded initiatives to address both immediate needs and long-term recovery efforts.
Reflecting on the spirit of generosity that fueled the People’s Fund, Kaimana Brummel, an advocate involved in the initiative, emphasized the importance of giving without expectations—a sentiment deeply ingrained in the Hawaiian concept of “kahiau.”
