Mobile Play and the Rise of the Online Casino App in Canada

by Hillary Latos
in Entertainment

Canadians have always loved casino gaming, but how they choose to engage is quickly changing. More people are choosing to play online rather than at a physical casino, and mobile apps have become the main way they do it.

The shift didn’t happen overnight but started one download at a time. Online casino operators noticed the demand and responded with more complete mobile experiences, giving players access to slots, table games and live casino ontario options without relying solely on traditional desktop sites. Let’s go over the journey so far from physical casinos to online apps.

The change that started before our eyes

Previously, a casino night entailed dressing up and driving to a brick-and-mortar establishment with fancy lights and ambient music. It was much more a social gathering of friends at a game of slots or cards.

The growth of home internet access from the late 1990s onward saw operators build desktop sites with digital versions of the casino games. You’d still play the same titles — slots, blackjack, roulette and poker — only in front of a screen.

It was a huge trade-off from social events to a more intimate session in your home. But it made for fun times with the quality graphics, animations, and sounds.

A desktop setup kept play in one place, which is simply how the technology worked at the time.

The rise of smartphone usage paved the way for operators to invest in casino apps, bringing the same range of classic and modern games to a phone screen. This coincided with the province of Ontario opening a regulated market for online gambling.

It takes more than an intuitive app

The growing popularity of casino apps meant operators with tailored experiences earned a larger user base.

A standard for casino apps became hosting thousands of titles from renowned game developers. It became common to find thousands of online slot titles, a selection of RNG table games, and a few live dealer rooms streamed in HD. ToonieBet, for instance, offers more than 3,000 casino games and a live dealer lobby, with dedicated apps available on both iOS and Android. The variety keeps things fresh, while regular new releases keep libraries current.

Fans started demanding more than a game once they got used to playing online. They wanted a storyline packed with sharp graphics and crisp visuals to keep things interesting. We witnessed more animations and soundtracks for a cinematic feel when playing.

Apart from the demands, there are other non-negotiables such as fast loading speeds and adaptive bitrate streaming for live dealer games. The more advancements in casino app development, the more intuitive the gaming experience became.

That ease of access also puts more responsibility on the player. Most licensed apps now build in tools like deposit limits and self-exclusion directly into the interface, and players in Ontario can contact ConnexOntario, which runs a free helpline available 24/7.

Growth of software developer partnerships

At the heart of this shift in Canadian gaming were software developers. These were the brains behind the intuitive outlook and immersive gaming experiences sought after by the audience.

Brands like Games Global and Evolution are household names. These developers built their reputations on bespoke creations and industry-first innovation. They deliver world-class gaming solutions for operators.

Far more than offering entertainment, these developers laid the groundwork for fair gaming practices. Their gaming mechanics were tested, and their results were reported by independent third-party testing companies. This guaranteed that the games were random, with their Random Number Generators (RNGs) certified to guarantee unpredictable outcomes.

Operators started partnering with these world-leading developers to form partnerships for branded games. A quick scroll through leading online casinos and you’d find a dedicated page for in-house games. This made operators add a touch of their style to the casino products for personalized gaming experiences.

Demand for more casino app experiences

Despite the revolutionary steps witnessed in the casino app development, we anticipate more new changes in the fold.

More operators are leveraging the power of AI for personalized gaming experiences. AI is increasingly used to analyze player behaviour and suggest game titles suited to one’s preferences. In regulated markets, the same kinds of systems can also support player-protection measures by flagging risky patterns of play.

There’s growing interest in blockchain-based payment options as an alternative to traditional banking, particularly for faster settlement. Blockchain technology also opens up provably fair mechanics, though in regulated markets such as Ontario, game fairness already rests on certification by accredited independent testing laboratories.

Crash games are also rising in popularity, thanks to their simpler mechanics compared to traditional slots or table games. As with any luck-based format, they’re worth approaching the same way as other casino products: with a set budget and clear limits. We anticipate more games with social engagement mechanics like live chats to take over.

What to think about the change

Casino apps are becoming more than a mobile app and more a gateway to entertainment on your phone. Plus, it’s getting more modern with AI, blockchain, and gamification coming on board. We anticipate more partnerships for inclusive gaming supported by the casino app.

Online gambling in Ontario is regulated by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario alongside iGaming Ontario, and is restricted to those of legal gambling age in their province.
