How to Handle a Car Accident While on Vacation

by Allen Brown
in Resource Guide

Vacations are meant to be fun. The last thing anyone expects is a car accident. But accidents do not care about your plans. If you are ever injured in a crash while on vacation, it can feel extremely overwhelming. You are in an unfamiliar place, you may not know the local laws, and your support system is far away. So what do you do?

Step One: Make Sure Everyone Is Safe

The first thing to do is take a breath and check for injuries. If anyone is seriously hurt, call 911 right away. Do not try to move an injured person unless they are in immediate danger, as it could make things worse.

If the vehicles are blocking traffic but can still move, pull them over to the shoulder or a nearby parking lot. Turn on your hazard lights so others on the road can see you. The goal here is to keep the situation from escalating into a bigger accident.

Step Two: Call the Local Police

Even if the accident seems minor, it is almost always prudent to get an official police report. In most states, it is legally required if someone is injured or if there is significant damage or injury.

That report will list who was involved, what happened, and where it happened. Later, when you are filing insurance claims or dealing with medical bills, that piece of paper becomes really important. Without it, you are left arguing with the other driver’s insurance about what really went down.

Step Three: Exchange Information

After you have called for help, you will want to swap details with the other driver. Make sure you get:

  • Full names and contact information
  • Driver’s license numbers
  • License plate numbers
  • Insurance company names and policy numbers

If there are any witnesses, get their contact info too. People come and go quickly on vacation. Once they walk away, you probably will not track them down again.

Step Four: Document the Crash Site

Your phone is your best tool here. Take pictures of the vehicles, the road conditions, traffic signs, skid marks, and anything else that seems relevant. Snap a few photos of any visible injuries too.

Also jot down details that might not show up in photos, like the weather, traffic flow, or unusual circumstances. If you are in a new place, street names and landmarks can help you remember exactly where it happened.

Step Five: Get Medical Attention

This step sometimes gets overlooked because you might not feel too bad at first. Maybe your neck is a little sore or you are just shaken up. But injuries like whiplash or internal trauma often do not show symptoms right away. Seeing a doctor immediately protects both your health and your ability to bring a claim later.

If you wait days before seeking treatment, insurance companies love to argue that you must not have been injured that badly. Getting checked right away avoids that problem and gives you peace of mind.

Step Six: Call Your Insurance Company

Most insurance policies require you to report accidents promptly. Call your insurer and let them know what happened. If you were driving a rental car, you may need to notify both your own insurance and the rental company. Sometimes, if you pay with a credit card, that card may offer extra coverage.

It might sound like a headache, but sorting this out quickly is much better than scrambling once you are back home.

Step Seven: Track All of Your Expenses

Car accidents come with significant costs, especially when you are traveling. Keep receipts for everything:

  • Medical bills and prescriptions
  • Extra hotel nights or meals if your trip is delayed
  • Taxi or rideshare expenses if your car is unusable
  • Lost deposits for activities you had to cancel

These can all potentially be part of your claim, but only if you can prove them.

Step Eight: Call an Olympia Personal Injury Attorney

If your injuries are serious, be prepared to schedule a consultation with an experienced and resourceful Olympia personal injury team as soon as possible. They can provide you with the best legal advice, deal with pushy insurance adjusters on your behalf, and make sure you have a strong case to recover compensation for your injuries and losses.

Dedicated personal injury lawyers offer free consultations, so even a quick conversation can give you clarity and reassurance about your legal rights and your financial future in the aftermath of a devastating accident and injury.

Keeping Calm in the Chaos

Accidents are stressful enough when they happen at home. On vacation, the stress is amplified. The best thing you can do is slow down and work through the basics: safety, police, information, documentation, medical care, and insurance. If you have suffered injuries due to another’s negligence, speak with a personal injury lawyer in Olympia to explore your legal options for financial recovery.
