providence canyon state park in georgia

Georgia is blessed with a vibrant sports culture, sunny skies throughout the year, and lively cities packed with fun amenities and attractions. Georgia is also home to stunning natural landscapes like the Providence Canyon State Park. Simply put: There’s something for everyone in Georgia!

If you’re looking to call this southeastern state your home, you’re probably wondering which city you should relocate to. There are a few factors to consider, like the cost of living and employment opportunities, but today we’ll focus on safety. Read on to learn more about the safest places to live in Georgia.

Is Georgia a Safe State?

Georgia is generally a safe state to live in. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s data, there were 339.9 violent crimes for every 100,000 people in 2023 and around 1770.5 instances of property crime per 100,000. This is slightly lower than the national average — the FBI’s data reported a total of 1,954.4 property crimes per 100,000 people and 380.7 violent crimes per 100,000 in 2022.

However, as is the case for any area, certain cities are considered safer than others. There are also other factors to be mindful of when determining whether an area is safe, such as general public perceptions of security, financial stability, and overall quality of life.

Safest Places to Live in Georgia

To help you narrow down your options, we’ve compiled a list of the safest places to live in Georgia. We’ve considered the factors above and included a whole range of places, from tight-knit communities like Senoia to large, amenity-packed cities like Johns Creek. You’re sure to find a city that suits your lifestyle and needs.

Holly Springs

Holly Springs has a low violent crime rate of 0.16 per 1,000 people, making it safer than 82% of cities in America. Serious violent crimes, such as assault, murder, and armed robbery, also happen less frequently in Holly Springs than in most other U.S. cities. What’s more, property crime is significantly lower than the national average, with a rate of 3.47 per 1,000 residents.

Beyond the statistics, Holly Springs is a fantastic place to live and is well-suited to families. There are plenty of fun amenities to explore and schools are generally well-rated.

Johns Creek

Johns Creek is the largest city featured on our list, with a population of more than 80,000 residents. Despite its large population size, Johns Creek is a safe city to live in, with a violent crime rate of 0.57 per 1,000 residents and a property crime rate of 4.96 per 1,000.

Johns Creek is particularly well-suited to people who lead active lifestyles, since the city offers a wealth of outdoor attractions, from golfing and fishing to beautiful parks and scenic hiking trails.

Milton

Milton is home to more than 40,000 residents and is widely regarded as one of the safest areas in Georgia. Official data shows a violent crime rate of 0.81 per 1,000 residents, with property crime at 6.48 per 1,000 people respectively. As a place to live, Milton offers the best of both worlds. The area has a homely suburban vibe, but there are plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes, and amenities to enjoy.

Senoia

Senoia offers a tight-knit community vibe that’s sure to appeal to those who lead quiet, laid-back lifestyles. While the city may be smaller than the likes of Johns Creek, it is incredibly safe, with an overall crime rate that’s significantly lower than the national average.

As a unique perk, Senoia is one of the main locations where The Walking Dead was filmed — perfect if you’re a diehard fan of the show!

Should You Move to Georgia?

Georgia is a great fit for families and single professionals alike. The state has a low crime rate overall, with cities like Holly Springs, Johns Creek, Milton, and Senoia being some of the safest cities around.

If you’re considering moving to Georgia, make sure to carry out your own research and visit the areas you’re interested in before making your decision. Visit at different times, particularly in the evening. This will provide you better insight into whether you can picture yourself living there comfortably, and more importantly, if you feel safe.

When you’re finally ready to make the move, be sure to familiarize yourself with moveBuddha’s list of the best movers to help you start your new life in Georgia.
