Zuckerberg’s Hawaiian Estate Venture 2024: In a surprising departure from the tech world’s high-tech endeavors, Mark Zuckerberg, the billionaire founder of Facebook and leader of Meta, has taken on a deliciously down-to-earth project on his $100 million estate in Hawaii. The social media titan is now in the business of raising cattle – not just any cattle, but beer-drinking and macadamia-eating ones that produce high-quality beef.
Zuckerberg’s rebrand since the COVID era has seen him share more personal aspects of his life on the platforms he owns, including updates on his jiu-jitsu training and even responding calmly to Elon Musk’s playful cage fight offer. Now, he’s revealing another facet of his life as a cattle rancher.
The media-shy mogul, whose land in Hawaii is estimated to be worth $100 million, recently disclosed his latest venture on Instagram. Contrary to rumors of an underground bunker, Zuckerberg shared his passion for nurturing a herd of special cattle that enjoys a diet of beer and macadamia meal. These cows, a mix of Wagyu and Angus breeds, are destined to produce some of the world’s highest-quality beef.
Zuckerberg’s Ko’olau Ranch, situated on the Garden Isle of Kauai, spans 1,400 acres. The tech giant has invested not only in cattle but also in sustainable practices, allocating part of his property to plant trees. With the revelation that each cow consumes between 5,000 to 10,000 pounds of food annually, Zuckerberg’s daughters, Maxima and August, aged 8 and 6, actively participate in looking after the cattle and planting trees. His youngest, 1-year-old Aurelia, is poised to join the project in the coming years.
The land purchases themselves have been contentious in a way the ranching story tends to overshadow. Zuckerberg’s acquisitions on Kauai, which now total well over a thousand acres, drew sustained local opposition, including litigation in 2017 over parcels held by Native Hawaiian families under kuleana land rights dating to the nineteenth century. Those suits were withdrawn after public objection. Hawaii has among the highest housing costs in the United States, and large purchases by mainland buyers remain a live political issue on the islands regardless of what is subsequently grown or raised on the land.
While it remains unclear how much time Zuckerberg spends in Hawaii compared to his Palo Alto residence in the San Francisco Bay Area, his foray into cattle ranching aligns with the trend of tech magnates seeking refuge away from traditional entrepreneurial hubs. Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has officially relocated to Miami, making it his permanent base, while Elon Musk is acquiring thousands of acres in Texas to build a town for his employees.
