How To Deal With The Emotional Side Of Relationship Failure

by Allen Brown

Dealing with the emotional side of relationship failure is always difficult. Especially in the context of romantic relationships. They can leave you feeling very mixed up and unsure how to proceed in the aftermath. You might be feeling a mixture of emotions like sadness, anger, and confusion, and not knowing how to deal with them.

Fortunately, this evidence-based guide is here to help. We take a look at some of the strategies you can use to get back on the right foot so you can carry on with your life.

Find your support system and lean on it

One of the most effective things you can do is find your support system and lean on it. If you can get people around you who are really committed to your well-being and understand what you’re going through, then it helps you avoid numbing activities. You can get face-to-face with other people, this is even better. Sharing your story and then talking to people who’ve been through similar pain can help you through and out to the other side.

Practice basic self-care

During this period, you’ll also want to focus on things like basic self-care. Don’t overeat or use any numbing agents or substances. These might offer temporary relief but they can make things worse in the long term, especially if you’re vulnerable and at risk of becoming more addicted. Instead, seek support from outside people and professionals. Get them to deal with the fundamental reasons for the suffering and help you through it.

Get professional help

Another thing you’ll want to do is get professional help, especially if you’re in a legal relationship with someone. Finding a divorce lawyer might be essential.

It can also reduce anxiety and worry. You can sort out things like your finances in the long-term future. And perhaps even find accommodation. You don’t have to always go through these difficult challenges alone.

Another strategy you can use is to limit contact with your ex. Sometimes they want to get in touch with you, and their emotions may change. However, if you are committed to moving on from the relationship, then you may need to completely block them off. Sometimes this is impossible, but having a no-contact rule helps you avoid reopening old wounds. If you do have to speak to them, only talk to them about things which are essential like dealing with finances or managing children. Try to avoid long conversations about emotions or future plans as these are often counterproductive if you have already made a decision to move on.

Engage in new activities

Finally, you’ll want to look at whether you should engage in some new activities. Travelling or trying out some new interests to fill your time with joyful pursuits can be a great way to improve the quality of your life. You can also boost your identity outside of the relationship. If you don’t do this, then it can be more challenging to break out of old habits.
