Gold IRA Investing: What Is It, Should You Do It & How?

by Allen Brown
in Investing

Planning for retirement is rather important for most people. No matter when you start planning, it usually begins with familiar investments, such as stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. Yet, some investors are nowadays turning towards precious metals and adding them to their portfolios, making them part of their long-term strategies.

Since you are here, it is safe to assume that you have started thinking about doing the same thing. You may have heard about gold IRAs from other investors, or you may have come across this account type while doing your own research. Whatever the case, chances are you are interested in understanding all of this better.

You want to know what a gold IRA is in the first place, as well as why it is that you may want to invest in it, and how to do it right. Those are all, without a doubt, quite important questions right there. So, what we are going to do now is answer them for you below, hoping to give you a better idea about it all and ultimately help you make up your mind on whether you want to do this or not. Then, if you decide to invest in a gold IRA, you will also know how to do it, as the article will cover that part as well.

What Is a Gold IRA?

Let us begin with the most basic question of them all. What exactly is a gold IRA? To cut right to the chase, this is a self-directed individual retirement account that allows people to hold approved precious metals, such as gold, silver, and some others, inside their portfolios. The eligible contributions can be tax deductible, depending on your specific circumstances, and the investments can grow tax-deferred. This useful source could help you understand it even better.

An important thing to understand here is that you cannot simply buy the precious metals and keep them at home. A Gold IRA has to follow some specific IRS rules. For one thing, the account has to be administered by an approved custodian. Then, the metals have to be stored within an approved depository, instead of at your own home.

Clearly, this account allows you to hold gold inside it. But, apart from that, it also allows for some other precious metals, including silver, palladium, and platinum. However, you have to understand right away that not every single coin or bar will qualify, as there are some specific requirements that have to be met for the metals to qualify for this account. And that further means that you will need to be careful when buying these, but we will get to that a bit later.

Should You Invest in It?

For a long time, gold has been viewed as a store of value. Unlike some other assets, such as company stocks, precious metals are tangible, and they do not depend on the earnings of a business or the balance sheet. Some investors view this as an opportunity to diversify their portfolio which is otherwise heavily concentrated in paper assets. There are, thus, several reasons why a gold IRA may be attractive to investors.

First off, gold tends to behave differently than bonds and stocks, for example. When those financial markets become volatile, precious metals have the tendency of holding up better than some other assets. This, clearly, does not mean that gold always increases in value during market declines. But its price movements usually don’t match the movements of those traditional investments, which is a huge plus.

Furthermore, some investors have recognized that gold can be a great hedge against inflation and currency concerns in general. When the purchasing power declines, or when there is economic uncertainty, the demand for precious metals can surely increase. Once again, this does not mean that gold is a guaranteed inflation hedge over every single period, since its price can still experience some swings. It does, however, mean that it can potentially be a great way to protect your portfolio against inflation.

On top of all that, physical precious metals are attractive because they can give investors some peace of mind. There is something about owning and holding a physical, finite asset that investors appreciate. Therefore, they add precious metals to their portfolios and use them as part of a broader retirement strategy, thus not relying solely on the financial markets.

There are, unsurprisingly, some risks involved in this kind of investing. As mentioned, gold is often associated with stability. But its prices can also be volatile. Thus, if you buy precious metals when the prices are high, you may find yourself having to wait for a long time to recover your losses.

The above should have given you a better idea about why investors are doing this. Plus, you have most likely also understood some of the risks involved. Whether you want to do this or not is, in the end, up to you. Knowing those benefits and drawbacks we have mentioned should, however, help you make up your mind.

How to Do It?

If you decide that you want to do it, you will want to learn how to do it right. The process usually involves a few important steps. The most significant thing to do, naturally, is choose the right precious metals company to be your partner in the process, because they will guide you through everything and sell you the assets you want to buy.

So, start by checking out more companies. Find them online or get recommendations from other investors. Then, check out their official sites and read some reviews, such as those you can find at The Globe And Mail to get a clearer overview of what to expect from specific companies. Those reviews and independent articles are sure to help you find the objectively best company for you.

Having found and chosen the company, the process will be much smoother from there. You will simply have to set up your gold IRA account and fund it. When it comes to funding, you can do a direct deposit or a rollover. Once again, the company you partner up with will help you out with that. When all of that is done, you will simply have to decide on the investments you want to make and start adding precious metals to your portfolio.
