Summer Events at LongHouse

in Charitable Events, Culture, Lifestyle, The Arts

Dance, Design, and Nature Converge This Season at LongHouse

Experience the captivating artistry of Lori Bellilove and The Isadora Duncan Dance Company as they grace the stage at LongHouse on Sunday, June 4th, at 4 PM. This dynamic all female ensemble comprises highly trained dancers who share a profound connection with the timeless art of Isadora Duncan. With a spirited approach, they embark on a creative journey, venturing into uncharted artistic territory to reimagine and evoke the essence of Duncan’s vision in the twenty first century.

A Summer Arrangement: Object & Thing at LongHouse

Ceramics by Frances Palmer gifted to Jack Lenor Larsen, photographed at LongHouse by Colin King

Opening to the public this Sunday, May 28th, A Summer Arrangement is a collaboration with Object & Thing inspired by Jack Lenor Larsen’s practice of arrangement, which was in itself an art form. Co-curators Glenn Adamson, LongHouse curator at large, and Abby Bangser, Object & Thing founder, alongside Colin King as installation designer, draw on Larsen’s non hierarchical approach to objects to bring together contemporary works, including site specific commissions spanning both art and design. Visit the exhibition in the LongHouse Gallery Saturdays and Sundays through September 3rd, 2023.

Visit LongHouse Wednesday through Sunday, 12:30 to 5 PM, and on Memorial Day from 10:30 AM to 2 PM.

Art in the garden

The most recent addition to this season’s Art in the Garden, Oscar Molina’s Children of the World, began its journey at LongHouse on May 5th. We are delighted that these sculptures will remain on view as they migrate through the gardens, making twelve stops over the next six months. Visit, encounter, and explore these figures and their meaning as they travel to a new location every two weeks.

Monuments: Community and Connection at LongHouse

Maren Hassinger is an artist and educator who explores human connection and community, along with their relationship to nature. A recurring element in her work is the use of both natural and industrial materials, alongside references to the specific location where each piece is created. The Monuments at LongHouse were created on site with the help of our visitors, using materials sourced directly from our garden. Though geometric in form, these volumes are surfaced with branches, sticks, and twigs that echo the growth of their natural surroundings. Visit, pick up a stick, and add to the creative process.

A Living Dialogue Between Art and Its Setting

What continues to distinguish this season’s programming is how directly each piece invites visitors into the creative process itself, rather than simply asking them to observe from a distance. Whether adding a stick to Hassinger’s evolving Monuments or following the slow migration of Molina’s sculptures through the gardens, guests become quiet collaborators in work that is never fully finished. That sense of shared authorship, woven throughout the grounds, reflects LongHouse’s broader belief that art lives most fully when it remains in conversation with the people and landscape around it.

Life in the Abstract: Painting and Sculpture Dialogue at LongHouse

Exploring the spatial relationship between two and three dimensions, the large scale Cor-Ten steel sculptures by Wyatt Kahn invite visitors into a conversation between representations of common, everyday objects and the artist’s abstract geometric language. Visit, discover, and contemplate the composition of lines, forms, shapes, objects, and yes, even a body part, that make up Parade, the largest of the three sculptures in the group, which also includes Umbrella and Painting the Painter, both from 2021.

Find something you like doing and you’ll do it very well, said our founder, Jack Lenor Larsen, and we believe the LongHouse Summer Internship program offers plenty of opportunity to do just that. College and graduate students are invited to apply now for this eight week program. Three positions are available, each with a $4,000 stipend upon completion.

Caroline, a graduate of Ross School, was a 2019 Summer Intern. She went on to graduate from Nazareth College in 2022 with a major in Museums, Archives, and Public History. She is now pursuing a career in museums and has returned to LongHouse during past summers as a valued member of our staff.

APPLY NOW

We will think not of what is maximum, but what is optimum, said Jack Lenor Larsen, inspiring LongHouse to remain open year round for students and educators to visit and tour the gardens free of charge.
