Throughout the past year, MacKenzie Scott has extended her philanthropic endeavors, donating a staggering $2.15 billion to various charitable causes. Her altruism knows no bounds, with gifts benefiting a diverse spectrum of organizations, from the Asian American Journalists Association to essential healthcare providers like abortion-pill providers.
Scott’s generosity has touched 360 organizations since last December, including legal-aid clinics and community health nonprofits. While the exact amounts granted to each charity remain undisclosed, the impact of her donations reverberates across a wide array of vital causes.
What has drawn the most attention from the nonprofit world is not the scale of the giving but its terms. Scott’s grants arrive unrestricted, meaning recipients decide how to spend them, and they come without the reporting requirements, matching conditions, or multi-stage application processes that typically consume enormous staff time at smaller organizations. Many groups have described learning of the gift through a single phone call. For a nonprofit accustomed to writing proposals for restricted program funding, money that can cover salaries, rent, or reserves is unusually valuable.
Unique among philanthropists, Scott, aged 53, opts not to channel her donations through a foundation, sidestepping the additional information disclosures mandated by IRS regulations.

Since her divorce from Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos, in 2019—Bezos currently ranks as the world’s third-richest individual with a fortune totaling $168.7 billion—Scott has contributed more than an awe-inspiring $16.5 billion to over 1,900 nonprofits. Her own net worth stands at a substantial $33.7 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
In 2019, Scott pledged her commitment to the Giving Pledge, aligning herself with a non-binding commitment made by billionaires to allocate the majority of their wealth towards philanthropy.
Reflecting on her dedication, Scott emphasized, “In addition to whatever assets life has nurtured in me, I have a disproportionate amount of money to share. My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful. It will take time and effort and care. But I won’t wait. And I will keep at it until the safe is empty.”
While Bezos, aged 59, hasn’t pledged similarly, he expressed his intent last year to donate the majority of his fortune over his lifetime, echoing Scott’s commitment to impactful philanthropy.
