Divenx and the Case for Knowing Your Real Numbers Before They Cost You

by Hillary Latos
in Business, Wealth

Wealth building for business owners does not start with investments. It starts with knowing what the business actually costs to run. That sounds obvious, but the gap between what owners think their costs are and what those costs actually measure is wide enough to erode years of profit.

The most common place that gap shows up is in hiring. A business owner preparing to bring on a new employee will typically estimate the cost by looking at the salary and adding a rough buffer for taxes. The shorthand most people use is salary times 1.3. It is tidy, easy to remember, and frequently wrong. The actual multiplier, once you account for state-specific payroll taxes, workers’ compensation premiums by job classification, benefits, paid time off, equipment, onboarding, and overhead, can range from 1.2 to 1.45. On a $55,000 salary, that spread is more than $13,000 per year. For a company making three or four hires in a year, the accumulated error can quietly consume an entire quarter’s profit.

The second place the gap appears is owner compensation. What should you actually pay yourself? The answer depends on profit margins, working capital requirements, retained earnings targets, and tax set-asides. Most owners do not calculate it. They take what feels reasonable or what the checking account seems to allow. Both approaches leave money misallocated, either starving the business of capital it needs to operate or leaving the owner subsidizing the company with personal savings.

A Platform Built Around Two Decisions

DivenX is a business education platform that addresses both of these problems directly. It provides two free calculators, one for the true cost of hiring an employee and one for determining reasonable owner compensation, alongside a library of plain-English articles on the financial mechanics of running a small business.

The hiring cost calculator does not produce a single lump-sum number. It generates a fully itemized breakdown: federal payroll tax, state unemployment insurance, workers’ compensation by class code, health insurance contributions, retirement matching, PTO costs, equipment, training time, and facility overhead. Each line item is visible. Each assumption is stated. The owner sees not just the total but where every dollar goes.

The owner compensation calculator works the same way. It takes the owner’s inputs on revenue, expenses, profit, and operating needs, then models what a reasonable draw looks like after working capital, retained earnings, and tax obligations are accounted for. The result is an estimate, clearly labeled, built entirely from figures the owner provided.

Both calculators are free to use without registration. No email gate. No account creation. No partial results that require a payment to access. The full output appears on screen immediately.

From Calculation to Planning

The free tier answers the immediate question. The paid tier, DivenX Pro at $29 per month or $290 per year, extends that answer into ongoing planning.

Pro subscribers can save calculations under named profiles. They can run side-by-side comparisons across different hiring scenarios or compensation models. They can model multiple roles within a single company profile. And they can access a dashboard that connects all saved calculations into a unified view. Change one underlying assumption, like a benefits contribution rate or a state tax adjustment, and the dashboard recalculates every saved scenario. It flags which previous decisions no longer hold under the new numbers.

This is not accounting software. DivenX never connects to a bank, does not import transactions, and does not sync with bookkeeping platforms. Every data point in the system comes from the owner. The platform provides structure, calculation logic, and scenario modeling. The financial decisions remain entirely with the business owner.

The Wealth Implications of Getting the Basics Right

For business owners building long-term wealth, the value of accurate cost data is not abstract. An owner who understands the true, loaded cost of each employee prices their services correctly. Correct pricing protects margins. Protected margins generate the profit that funds growth, builds reserves, and eventually creates the option to sell, transition, or step back from daily operations.

The chain works in reverse too. An owner who underestimates employee costs by five or ten percent across the board will underprice services, compress margins, and spend years working harder to earn less. The business looks busy. The owner feels productive. But the financial position of the company erodes slowly enough that the problem is not obvious until a recession, a lost client, or a major expense forces a reckoning.

Owner compensation follows the same pattern. An owner who consistently draws more than the business can support reduces its ability to weather a slow period, fund new equipment, or capitalize on an opportunity. An owner who draws too little builds resentment, risks burnout, and may eventually walk away from a business that was profitable but never felt like it.

DivenX does not make promises about wealth outcomes. It does not offer investment guidance, tax advice, or financial planning services. What it offers is the ability to see, clearly and without guesswork, what a hire actually costs and what an owner can reasonably pay themselves. Those two numbers, calculated honestly, are the foundation that every other financial decision in the business rests on.

For owners serious about building something that lasts, getting those numbers right is not optional. It is where the real work of wealth building begins.
