Why Having a Hobby is So Good For You

It’s easy to become overwhelmed by work, responsibilities, and never ending to-do lists. Whilst it’s good to follow advice such as getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and prioritising exercise, one key piece of advice that often gets overlooked is taking the time to engage in a hobby.

Whether it be sports, gardening, music, or art, hobbies offer a range of benefits that can support a happy and healthy lifestyle. So, here are just a handful of reasons why having a hobby is so good for you.

Positively Impacts Your Mental Health

Engaging in an enjoyable activity not only gives you a distraction from your worries, but can also give you a sense of purpose that can keep you going through difficult times. Additionally, hobbies can give you a sense of achievement that can boost your self esteem and in turn combat feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression.

Offers Opportunities For Personal Development

Hobbies are a great way to push yourself out of your comfort zone, develop new skills, and allow you to set personal goals outside of your regular responsibilities. Not only can this improve your sense of self worth, but it can also give you a much needed confidence boost.

Encourages Social Connection

Hobbies are also a great way to ensure you are regularly socialising, which is another crucial aspect of maintaining good mental health. For example, avid rugby fans are given the opportunity to connect with others over a shared enthusiasm for the sport. Keeping up with the Springboks fixtures or regularly checking the latest scores from the Lions Tour is a way for rugby fans to bond, share opinions on their favourite players, and celebrate victories with fellow supporters.

Improves Physical Health

Hobbies like cycling, swimming, or football can contribute to sustaining good physical health. Even less physically demanding activities such as gardening are beneficial – getting your body moving in any format is good for you. And since physical and mental health go hand in hand, boosting your physical fitness will also have a positive influence on your mental wellbeing.

Promotes a Healthy Work-Life Balance

Taking time for personal interests can significantly improve your work-life balance. By giving yourself time for things you enjoy outside of work, you get the chance to relax and recharge your batteries, which ultimately leads to better output and motivation levels at work.
