Unveiled on June 17, this newest addition to the Clase Azul portfolio is more than an experiment in smoke—it is a return to roots, elevated. Drawing from ancestral mezcal-making traditions and executed with the brand’s unmistakable precision, Blanco Ahumado captures a rare harmony: fire meeting finesse.
A Ritual Reborn
At the heart of this unaged tequila is a process nearly forgotten in modern distillation. Blue Weber agave, harvested in the red clay soils of Los Altos de Jalisco, is cooked in an underground stone-lined pit—a technique older than tequila itself. Firewood, volcanic rock, and time do the work. Flames never touch the agave directly; instead, heat is transferred through the stones, allowing for a gentler transformation—one that coaxes out smoke while preserving the plant’s bright, mineral sweetness.
“We weren’t trying to imitate mezcal,” shares Viridiana Tinoco, Master Distiller at Clase Azul México. “We were reinterpreting its soul—translating it into tequila through intention, restraint, and respect for the agave.”
That reverence carries through every stage. After cooking, the agave is shredded, fermented with proprietary yeast cultivated from wild strains in Clase Azul’s own fields, and double distilled in handcrafted copper stills. The result is a tequila that feels both elemental and elevated.
The Taste of Fire, Artfully Controlled
Clase Azul Tequila Blanco Ahumado reveals itself slowly, like smoke unfurling from a flame. The nose greets with roasted agave, fresh plum, and a whisper of red apple. On the palate, a crystalline lemon brightness cuts through, balanced by earthy minerality and a luxuriously silken finish, touched just-so by smoke. It is not loud. It is composed. Elegant. Intentional.
At 45% ABV, it carries power without force—a quiet authority that lingers, more perfume than bonfire.
Design that Speaks in Texture
True to form, Clase Azul’s presentation is as emotive as its contents. The decanter is a study in symbolism: semi-opaque glass recalling the swirl of smoke during cooking; a tactile ceramic base evoking the volcanic stone ovens; and copper detailing echoing the artisanal stills where the final distillation occurs. Together, they create a vessel that does more than hold—it tells a story.
Each bottle, released with a bespoke collector’s case, is available only while this inaugural supply lasts. With a suggested price of $250 for 750 ml, it is a luxurious addition to any connoisseur’s cabinet—or more accurately, to their ritual.
