Nintendo’s Zelda Movie Plans Drive Shares Up 6% After Mario Success

Nintendo has announced its plans to bring The Legend of Zelda, one of its beloved characters, to the big screen in a live-action film. Following the success of the Mario movie, Nintendo aims to replicate its achievements in the world of cinema.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Zelda, and Avi Arad, chairman of Arad Productions Inc. known for producing hit Marvel movies, will take the helm of the Zelda film’s production.

Nintendo is leveraging its strong lineup of iconic characters to expand into the world of movies, with the goal of driving more users to purchase its popular gaming console, the Switch. The company appears to be buoyed by the tremendous success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which has grossed over $1 billion at the box office since its April release, created in collaboration with Universal Studios.

This strategy proved to be a game-changer for Nintendo, as it reignited interest in the more than six-year-old Nintendo Switch console and its games, prompting the company to increase its full-year profit and sales forecast.

Now, with the Zelda movie in the works, Nintendo hopes to replicate its cinematic success and capitalize on the popularity of “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” game, which has sold over 19 million units since its May release.

Investors are eager for a repeat performance, as Nintendo’s shares surged by 6% in Japan after the announcement.

Nintendo’s decision to produce visual content based on its intellectual property (IP) opens new avenues for people worldwide to access its world of entertainment outside dedicated game consoles. The company aims to expand its reach and engage a broader audience.

The Zelda movie will be a collaborative effort, with Nintendo co-financing it alongside Sony Pictures. Nintendo will contribute more than 50% of the film’s funding, while Sony Pictures will handle theatrical distribution. Wes Ball will direct the movie, adding to the anticipation surrounding this exciting new project.
