How to Find Your Style When You’re Just Getting Started

by Impact Contributor
in Fashion, Resource Guide

Trying to figure out your personal style can feel confusing, especially when there are so many different trends and opinions out there. You might like a little bit of everything, or maybe you’re not even sure what looks good on you yet. That’s completely normal, and the good news is that finding your style doesn’t have to happen all at once. It’s something you can build slowly, with each outfit, accessory, and idea helping you feel more like yourself.

Style isn’t about copying someone else or following every trend you see. It’s about finding pieces that make you feel confident, comfortable, and happy with what you’re wearing. With some practice, inspiration, and experimenting, you can figure out what works for you and what doesn’t.

Pay attention to what you already like

The best place to start is with your own closet. Look at the clothes you already wear all the time and ask yourself why you like them. Maybe it’s the color, the shape, or just how soft the fabric feels. These clues help you learn more about what kind of style you’re naturally drawn to.

You can also notice what pieces you keep avoiding. If something always stays in the back of the closet, there’s probably a reason. This is a great way to figure out what’s not your style without wasting time or money.

Get inspired by what others are wearing

Looking at how other people dress can help you discover new ideas for your own wardrobe. You can scroll through social media, check out people at school or in your neighborhood, or follow some of your favorite celebrities or influencers. The goal isn’t to copy exactly what they wear, but to pick out what you like from different looks.

Reading fashion blogs is another fun way to see real outfits and get styling tips. These blogs often show clothes in action, not just on models, so it’s easier to picture how they might work for you.

Try building a mood board

Sometimes seeing a bunch of images in one place helps you figure out your style faster. You can use a Pinterest board, a digital collage, or even cut pictures from magazines and put them on your wall. When you group your favorite outfits and colors together, you start to see patterns in what you like.

You might notice that you’re drawn to neutral colors, sporty looks, or bright patterns. Once you spot the pattern, it becomes easier to shop for clothes that match the look you’re starting to build.

Focus on comfort and fit first

You’ll never feel confident in an outfit if it’s uncomfortable. That’s why fit is so important when it comes to finding your style. Before you focus too much on trends, try finding clothing shapes and fabrics that feel good when you wear them, especially for long days when comfort really matters.

Some people love baggy jeans and oversized hoodies, while others prefer fitted clothes or stretchy materials. There’s no right or wrong answer here. When your clothes fit well and feel good, you’re more likely to wear them with confidence and enjoy what you’re wearing throughout the entire day.

Start with simple pieces you can mix and match

When you’re building your style, it helps to start with a few basics that can be worn in different ways. Things like plain T-shirts, simple jeans, and neutral jackets go with a lot of other items and give you more options. You don’t need a closet full of clothes to have good style.

Once you have those basics, you can add fun extras like printed tops, colorful shoes, or unique earrings to show your personality. Accessories are great because they let you try new styles without spending too much or changing your whole outfit.

Don’t be afraid to try new things

Trying new looks is part of the process. You might not get it right every time, but experimenting helps you figure out what works and what doesn’t. Try on something that’s different from what you usually wear just to see how it feels, even if it’s way outside your comfort zone.

You might end up loving a color or style you never expected. Or you might wear something once and realize it’s not for you. Either way, you’re learning more about your personal style with each outfit you try, and every step helps you feel more confident in your choices.

Shop with a plan and take your time

Before buying anything new, think about what you already have and how the new piece will fit with it. Ask yourself if you’ll actually wear it or if it’s just something that looks cool at the moment because of a trend. It’s better to buy a few things you really love than a bunch of clothes you’ll never wear, especially when you’re trying to build a wardrobe that actually works for your everyday life.

Taking your time also helps you avoid impulse buys. The more you think about your choices, the more your closet starts to reflect your real style instead of random trends. It’s about creating a space where everything has a purpose and makes you feel good when you wear it.

Let your style change with you

Your style doesn’t have to stay the same forever. As you grow, your style might change too, and that’s completely fine. You’ll learn more about yourself and what feels right as time goes on, and your outfits can change along with that.

What matters most is that you feel good in your clothes. When your style feels like you, it shows in the way you walk, talk, and show up in the world.

Finding your style takes time, but it can also be a lot of fun. Pay attention to what you like, try new things, and focus on how clothes make you feel. Your style is yours to build, and you can keep shaping it as you grow. Just start where you are and enjoy the process.
