Why SEO Professionals Use Proxies for Rank Tracking?

by Allen Brown

Using proxies can be a great idea for a variety of niches, and this can also include SEO professionals. SEO is a field that’s data-driven, and you need to have both consistency and accuracy. The challenge here is that you need to acquire accurate ranking data. Proxies play a major role here, because they make it easy to gather location-specific, large-scale and unbiased data without triggering any reactions from search engines.

Why is it challenging to get accurate rank tracking?

The main issue stems from the fact that search engines are personalizing results based on multiple factors. Those can be the search history, browsing behavior, device type, location and so on. Even if two people search for the same keyword, their results will not be identical, and that’s important to keep in mind.

An SEO professional will find this challenge. That’s because they need depersonalized, objective data, which is crucial for rank tracking. It makes sense to use a proxy for this type of situation, because it ends up more effective, comprehensive, and the results will be great in the long term.

How do proxies help SEO professionals?

The role of a proxy is simple, and that’s to help you route the data via a different IP address. What this does is:

  • It helps mask the original IP address
  • You can send multiple requests without worrying about any restrictions
  • It’s easier to enable location-based searches
  • You can lower the personalization impact

Simply put, using proxies makes it much easier to create a controlled environment where you can start collecting search data accurately. And it works very well, while offering consistent results and very good value.

Why does an SEO professional use proxies?

In general, an SEO professional will use proxies for a multitude of different, yet important tasks. Those can include:

  • You can avoid the captcha and IP blocks. Search engines are meant to detect any unusual behavior, be it a high volume of repeated searches or anything of that nature. By using a proxy, you can circumvent that problem.
  • It’s also much easier to collect location-specific data, a crucial approach especially in the case of local SEO campaigns, international targeting, competitor analysis in different regions and so on. And that’s all thanks to the location-based proxies that you can start using as well.
  • You can remove the personalized search results. That’s great, because you can access unbiased data instead of the general stuff which would normally be quite the problem to deal with.
  • It becomes easier to scale rank tracking operations with a good proxy. And that’s mostly because proxies allow automation tools to handle large-scale rank tracking without any concerns.
  • Believe it or not, but with these proxies, it also becomes much easier to manage your competitors as well. In fact, you can track competitor positions in different regions. And you can do that without any type of interference. That means you can identify ranking trends, analyze the current market positioning, and all of that is inherently helpful.

What kind of proxies can you use for SEO work?

Everyone wants to find the best proxy for every use case, and in the case of SEO work, those can vary quite a lot. Data center proxies are inexpensive, but the problem is that they can be very easy to detect. They are fine for a smaller-scale operation, however. If you want to not be detected, then it’s a good idea to opt for residential proxies. It’s better to use these as an SEO professional, mainly because detection is not as much of an issue.

And then, we have mobile proxies which use IPs from mobile networks. These are known for having a higher level of trust, something that does matter quite a lot. While they are reliable, these are also expensive, which could set them outside of your budget.

Best practices to help you use proxies in rank tracking

  • Always try to combine proxies with reliable tools. A single proxy won’t do wonders, and that’s extremely important to consider. Tools that manage data collection, rotations and requests will be very effective here.
  • It also helps if you are limiting the request frequency. For example, if you are sending too many requests in a short amount of time, that might trigger search engine defenses. So it makes a lot of sense to space out queries. It will keep a more natural pattern, which in turn will lead to a more consistent and rewarding result.
  • It makes sense to rotate IP addresses. Not only will it help with preventing detection, but it also makes distributing requests a whole lot easier to do.
  • Using high-quality proxies is always the best approach. Not only will it help you get the best performance, but you also prevent backlisting, which is a huge issue.

Following these best practices is a great idea because you can eliminate a lot of potential issues which could sometimes arise. At the end of the day, the most important thing is to understand what leads to these problems and the potential challenges being brought to the table.

Are there any risks? As always, using proxies can have its fair share of risks. For example, you can experience blocking and detection, something that can become an issue in its own right. There can also be data accuracy problems, along with multiple security concerns. Knowing how to tackle this problem is excellent, and it will surely make things a whole lot better.

Conclusion

There’s no denying that there are always challenges when it comes to doing SEO work, due to the search engine limitations. Proxies can be a life-saver, because they remove those limits, while offering more consistent value and quality. It truly is a very good idea to start implementing proxies, because they will eliminate the worries of getting blacklisted, while also being able to access unbiased, not personalized data. That can prove to be a life-saver, especially for an SEO professional that relies on unbiased data to optimize a website.
