How to Choose the Right Hemorrhoids Treatment Based on Symptoms

by Impact Contributor
in Health & Wellness

Dealing with hemorrhoids can feel uncomfortable, frustrating, and even embarrassing. Yet, it’s a common condition that millions of people experience. The good news is that there are several hemorrhoids treatments available, and choosing the right one largely depends on your specific symptoms.

Understanding Hemorrhoids Treatment and Their Symptoms

Before we dive into treatments, it’s important to understand what hemorrhoids treatment are and the symptoms they cause. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins located in the lower part of the rectum and anus. They can be internal (inside the rectum) or external (around the anus). Common symptoms include:

  • Pain and discomfort: You may experience pain, itching, or tenderness around the anus, especially when sitting.
  • Bleeding: Bright red blood may appear on toilet paper or in the toilet bowl after a bowel movement.
  • Swelling and lumps: External hemorrhoids often cause swelling and lumps that can be felt or seen.
  • Irritation and itching: The skin around the anus can become irritated due to hemorrhoids, leading to itching.

These symptoms can vary in intensity, which is why it’s crucial to select a treatment that fits your condition’s severity. Now, let’s look at how you can match your symptoms to the appropriate hemorrhoids treatment.

Hemorrhoids Treatment for Mild Symptoms

If your symptoms are mild—like occasional itching or slight discomfort after bowel movements—you might not need anything too invasive. For these cases, there are a few at-home remedies that can bring significant relief:

1. Over-the-counter (OTC) creams and ointments

These products can help relieve itching, pain, and swelling. Ingredients such as hydrocortisone or witch hazel are commonly found in OTC treatments and can soothe irritation.

2. Warm Sitz baths

A simple, soothing remedy for mild hemorrhoid symptoms involves soaking the affected area in warm water. Sitz baths can relieve discomfort, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. Just be sure to avoid using soap or perfumed products during the soak, as these can irritate the skin.

3. Wipes with witch hazel or aloe vera

Instead of using regular toilet paper, consider switching to moist wipes containing soothing ingredients like witch hazel or aloe vera. These can gently cleanse the area without causing additional irritation.

4. Increase fiber and water intake

A simple lifestyle change, like eating more fiber-rich foods and drinking more water, can prevent constipation, which is a leading cause of hemorrhoids. This helps make bowel movements smoother and reduces straining.

Hemorrhoids Treatment for Moderate Symptoms

For moderate symptoms—like swelling, frequent bleeding, and pain during bowel movements—more targeted treatment options are needed. In addition to the at-home remedies mentioned earlier, here are some effective treatments:

1. Prescription-strength creams

If OTC creams aren’t doing enough, a healthcare provider may prescribe a stronger topical ointment or steroid cream to help reduce inflammation and discomfort. These are typically used for a short period to avoid side effects like skin thinning.

2. Rubber band ligation

This is a minimally invasive procedure for internal hemorrhoids. A doctor places a small rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid, cutting off its blood supply. The hemorrhoid will eventually fall off within a few days. It’s a safe and effective way to treat moderate internal hemorrhoids.

3. Infrared coagulation (IRC)

This procedure uses infrared light to shrink hemorrhoidal tissue. It’s often used for internal hemorrhoids and can be performed in a doctor’s office. While it’s less invasive than surgery, it’s still a step up from OTC treatments and home remedies.

4. Manage bowel movements

At this stage, managing bowel movements is critical. Consider using stool softeners to make passing stool easier. Avoid straining, as this can worsen hemorrhoids and cause more irritation.

Hemorrhoids Treatment for Severe Symptoms

For severe symptoms, such as large external hemorrhoids that cause intense pain or significant bleeding, medical intervention becomes necessary. In these cases, a doctor may recommend one of the following treatments:

1. Surgical removal (hemorrhoidectomy)

In severe cases, surgery may be required to remove the hemorrhoids. A hemorrhoidectomy is typically reserved for very large or thrombosed hemorrhoids (hemorrhoids with blood clots). Though recovery time can take several weeks, this procedure is highly effective.

2. Stapled hemorrhoidopexy

For internal hemorrhoids that are prolapsed (falling out of the anus), a stapled hemorrhoidopexy may be recommended. This procedure involves using a stapling device to remove excess tissue and reposition the hemorrhoids. It’s less painful than a hemorrhoidectomy and has a quicker recovery time.

3. Hemorrhoid banding or sclerotherapy for large internal hemorrhoids

For large internal hemorrhoids that don’t respond to other treatments, a doctor might recommend hemorrhoid banding or sclerotherapy. In banding, a rubber band is placed around the hemorrhoid to cut off its blood supply, causing it to shrink and fall off. In sclerotherapy, a solution is injected to shrink the hemorrhoid. Both methods are effective for severe cases but are still minimally invasive compared to surgery.

When to Seek Professional Help

While many people can manage mild and moderate hemorrhoids with over-the-counter treatments and lifestyle changes, there are situations where you should seek medical attention:

  • If you experience persistent or severe bleeding
  • If you notice prolapsed hemorrhoids that do not retract
  • If home treatments do not provide relief after a few days
  • If your pain becomes unbearable or worsens over time

A doctor will be able to assess your condition, determine whether surgery is necessary, and guide you to the most appropriate hemorrhoids treatment.

Preventing Hemorrhoids from Recurring

Once you’ve treated your hemorrhoids, it’s essential to take steps to prevent them from coming back. Here are some prevention tips to consider:

  • Maintain a high-fiber diet: Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to avoid constipation and straining.
  • Drink plenty of water: Staying hydrated softens stool and makes it easier to pass.
  • Exercise regularly: Physical activity helps maintain good bowel health and prevents constipation.
  • Practice good bathroom habits: Avoid sitting on the toilet for long periods and don’t strain during bowel movements.

Conclusion

Choosing the right hemorrhoids treatment depends on your symptoms, the severity of the condition, and your overall health. While home remedies can be effective for mild cases, more severe hemorrhoids may require medical intervention. Always consult a healthcare professional if you’re unsure which treatment is best for you.

With the right care, you can manage and even prevent hemorrhoids, leading to improved comfort and overall well-being. And while it may not be a glamorous topic, addressing hemorrhoids head-on can make all the difference in your day-to-day comfort—no matter where you are, even if you happen to be near goodwill bins on a shopping trip!
