A Journey of Values with Mr. VanderSloot: Building a Business with Purpose and People First

by Hillary Latos
in Business, Impact Leaders, Resource Guide

Some people build companies. Others build legacies that reflect who they are. From a small community in northern Idaho, one individual shaped a company that now reaches hundreds of thousands of households across multiple countries. His story isn’t just about leadership. It’s about priorities, like family, faith, service, and hard work. The foundation for everything began on a farm in Cocolalla, where he learned firsthand the value of honesty and responsibility. Those lessons still shape the decisions he makes today.

Let’s take a journey on how a driven individual built a legacy by putting people first:

The Foundation: From Rural Roots to Global Reach

In 1985, Melaleuca: The Wellness Company opened its doors with a simple goal: to offer safer, high-quality household and personal care essentials. Based in Idaho Falls, the company has since expanded internationally, reaching over 650,000 households. Its founder, Mr. VanderSloot, took a different approach from traditional direct sales companies. Instead of flashy pitches, the company focused on building trust through consistent delivery, word-of-mouth referrals, and practical solutions.

Melaleuca offers more than 300 consumable items, ranging from cleaning supplies to skincare and dietary support. Many of these items contain tea tree oil, an ingredient known for its versatility. Frank VanderSloot believed people wanted choices that worked without compromise. Under his direction, the company stayed committed to that path. Today, Melaleuca employs thousands and maintains a steady presence in regions including the U.S., Japan, Australia, and the UK. But it wasn’t just expansion that defined its growth. It was a people-first philosophy grounded in values that started on a farm.

Values That Drive Business Decisions

Leading a growing company didn’t happen by chance. VanderSloot’s early life in Cocolalla gave him a strong foundation. Chores weren’t optional. Every family member contributed. That taught him accountability and grit. His parents, his father known for his honesty, and his mother for her structure, shaped how he approached leadership.

In the interview, VanderSloot emphasized how those roots influenced his belief system. He talked about discipline, fairness, and being mindful of how each decision affects people and not just processes. These weren’t just personal views; they became part of the company culture. As Melaleuca grew, he maintained those standards by encouraging leaders around him to do the same. He once brought his executive team to his childhood home for a retreat so they could see where it all began and understand the stories that shaped their direction.

Learning Through Personal Growth

Behind success are usually stories of struggle. VanderSloot’s first marriage ended in divorce, something he openly took responsibility for. He explained how easy it is to become absorbed in one area of life while letting others fall behind. At the time, he believed he was balancing things. Looking back, he realized he wasn’t. That experience changed him. He committed to being better and made choices that reflected that promise.

Today, Frank and his wife, Belinda, have a blended family of 14 children. He acknowledges the challenges, but also the rewards. His growth wasn’t just professional, but it was personal. He shifted how he managed time, restructured priorities, and learned that presence at home holds as much weight as performance at work.

Leading with Faith and Purpose

VanderSloot’s belief system plays a central role in how he navigates leadership. At 17, he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It wasn’t just a religious shift. It gave him a new view of purpose. The idea that every person has worth influenced how he treated others. It helped him stay grounded and shaped his ability to forgive, reflect, and move forward when mistakes were made.

He often spoke about aligning actions with values, and setting goals that reflect something deeper than earnings or public recognition. For VanderSloot, faith gave clarity, especially when things felt uncertain. It taught him to look at setbacks as lessons, and to view each decision through a lens of long-term impact rather than short-term gain.

Building a Culture Around People

Company culture can’t be forced. It comes from the top and filters down. VanderSloot created an environment where people mattered. It wasn’t just about performance reviews or team-building exercises. He believed in forming real relationships. That retreat in Cocolalla wasn’t just symbolic, but it was intentional. By walking his team through the woods and past his family’s old tractor, he invited them to understand where their leadership model came from.

By staying close to his roots, he built a workplace that values honesty, patience, and respect. People don’t just work for Melaleuca, but they feel connected to its direction. That connection continues to shape how decisions are made today, across departments and international offices.

Recognition and Steady Growth

Awards never seemed to be the goal, but they came anyway. Melaleuca has been listed among Inc. Magazine’s 500 fastest-growing private companies and earned a spot in its Hall of Fame. In 2003, the Idaho Association of Commerce and Industry gave the company its Environmental Excellence Award, highlighting its commitment to practical environmental standards, not just promises.

VanderSloot also earned personal recognition. In 2001, he was named Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young, CNN, and USA Today for the Northwestern region. He serves on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors and has taken on leadership roles there as well. These honors reflect both steady growth and the consistency of values behind it.

Simple Joys Define Real Success

Despite his schedule and accomplishments, VanderSloot says the best days are the quiet ones. No press, no deadlines—just time with his wife and children. One of his favorite recent memories? A day spent on the Oregon Coast with his family crabbing, cooking together, laughing, and going to bed tired.

These moments bring things into perspective. Success, for him, isn’t just in metrics or reports. It’s in the memories made around the dinner table and in the comfort of shared time. That’s what he works for. That’s what matters most.

In an age when speed and scale often drive decisions, VanderSloot’s story is a reminder of something different. His journey shows that steady values, clear priorities, and an honest approach to work and life can shape not only a company, but generations of people who interact with it. From the farm fields of Cocolalla to the halls of Melaleuca, he’s kept the same core belief: if you treat people right, the rest will follow.
