Five Epic Spots In San Francisco To Park Your Campervan

San Francisco is legendary for campervan adventures! Coastal drives, redwood forests, and iconic city views are all within easy reach, which makes the Bay Area perfect for travellers who want flexibility on the road. Choosing the right overnight base can make the difference between a stressful trip and a seriously smooth one. Below are six excellent campervan-friendly places around San Francisco.

1. Half Moon Bay State Beach Campground

If waking up near the ocean is high on your priority list, Half Moon Bay State Beach Campground is a standout choice. Located south of the city, this coastal site gives you easy beach access and classic California scenery.

The Francis Beach section includes dozens of campsites suitable for tents and campervans, many with electrical hookups, picnic tables, and fire rings. Coin-operated hot showers are also available, which is always a win after a salty beach day. It is popular in summer, so booking ahead is strongly recommended.

2. Bicentennial Campground

Tucked into the Marin Headlands just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, Bicentennial Campground offers one of the closest nature escapes to San Francisco. This is a more low-key, nature-focused camping option. Facilities are basic, but the payoff is peaceful surroundings and quick access to coastal hiking trails.

The Golden Gate National Recreation Area actually has several small campgrounds in the Marin Headlands, all of which require reservations in advance. This spot suits travellers who prefer quiet nights over resort-style amenities.

3. Hawk Campground

Hawk Campground is another Marin Headlands favourite and ideal for travellers wanting a proper unplugged experience. It sits in the Sausalito hills and feels surprisingly remote given how close it is to the city. Expect limited reception and simple facilities, but you will be rewarded with sweeping coastal views and excellent hiking access. It is a great pick for confident campervanners who do not mind a more rustic setup. Because space is limited, plan and reserve early.

4. Samuel P Taylor State Park Campground

For something more forest-focused, Samuel P Taylor State Park offers a beautiful redwood setting about an hour north of San Francisco. This campground is known for its shaded sites, peaceful creekside environment, and access to hiking and cycling trails. It works particularly well for travellers who want that classic Northern California woodland feel without driving deep into the state. It is also a solid midway base if you are planning to explore Point Reyes or Marin County.

5. China Camp State Park

Located on the shores of San Pablo Bay, China Camp State Park is often overlooked by visitors, which is part of its appeal. The campground area offers a quieter alternative to busier coastal parks while still keeping you within easy reach of San Francisco. You will find basic camping facilities along with great opportunities for kayaking, cycling, and shoreline walks. It is a good option for travellers who want a more relaxed overnight stop that still feels close to the action. Sunset views over the bay here can be seriously underrated.

6. Angel Island State Park Campground

For something a little different, Angel Island State Park offers a unique camping experience in the middle of San Francisco Bay. Campers typically ferry across with their gear and enjoy panoramic views back toward the city skyline and Golden Gate Bridge.

Tent sites are the main option here, but campervan travellers sometimes incorporate it into their itinerary as a side trip while staying nearby on the mainland. The island is known for its sweeping bay views and quieter feel compared to the mainland. It is not the most convenient overnight stop, but it is definitely memorable.

Planning your Bay Area campervan trip

Before locking in your campsites, it helps to map your route around the Bay Area carefully and lock in a vehicle. Many travellers organise their vehicle through the Travellers Autobarn in San Francisco before finalising accommodation stops. Having your camper sorted early makes it much easier to secure popular campgrounds and plan realistic driving days. A bit of forward planning here pays off quickly.

Final thoughts

San Francisco is an outstanding base for campervan travel, but choosing the right places to stay overnight makes a huge difference to the overall experience. Whether you prefer coastal camps, forest hideaways, or quiet bayside parks, the region offers far more variety than most travellers expect. Book early where you can, stay flexible with your route, and give yourself time to explore beyond the obvious city highlights.
