Before understanding chargeback fraud, get to know what a chargeback is. 

Chargebacks 

Chargebacks are requests initiated by a customer through their bank to reverse a payment and claim a refund for a transaction. It can occur due to a variety of reasons, such as customer dissatisfaction, errors from the business or customer end, or even fraud. While actual chargebacks would be the legitimate transaction that enhances customer satisfaction, the false ones lead to financial impact on the business.

Chargeback Frauds 

So, the latter situation is chargeback fraud. Here, the customer requests the funds back intentionally while keeping the service or product. The chargeback frauds are of different types, including friendly, criminal, merchant, subscription, digital goods chargebacks, return fraud, and others. These frauds mainly impact the online sellers, subscription-based businesses, or the ones that sell high-value products or services. 

Impact of Chargeback Fraud on Business Revenue and Reputation

Chargeback fraud can impact businesses in numerous ways. Here are the insights into the same: 

Revenue Loss 

The wrong chargeback request obviously leads to payments from the business end. However, the payments aren’t limited to this. The chargeback may also include additional costs, such as chargeback fees. It ranges from INR 200 to 600 for each chargeback and needs to be paid to the payment processor and the acquiring bank. The shipping losses and overhead costs also need to be paid by the business, adding to their financial losses. 

Operational Expenses

Request for a chargeback involves a detailed enquiry and understanding of the problem. It consumes time, resources, and finances. Time and resources are another crucial factor here, owing to the inability to invest the same in strategic thinking and business growth planning. 

The time and resources would also have been used in listening to and resolving the genuine customer queries and issues, which would have actually earned customer loyalty and satisfaction for the business. 

Capital Expenses 

Another aspect of the increase in operational or capital cost would be investment into fraud prevention tools and associated measures. It would involve developing an effective team for the same, using third-party fraud detection and verification tools, and other expenditures. These all come at the cost of business profits. 

Long-Term Penalty 

The businesses may have to deal with long-term losses if the chargeback ratio is above 1%. It means the payment processors may deem the business to be risky and hence increase the transaction fees. They may also face consequences like fund withholding or account suspension, which again hinder the cash flow and business continuity. 

Impact on Inventory 

For the chargebacks that do not require product returns, the loss goes up to the inventory. They lose a quality product, and hence the overall investments in raw material, procurement, and other such costs. 

Customer Loss  

Multiple chargebacks pose problems for both the customer and the platform used for the transaction. The result is negative reviews on social media, the website, and other sources. 

This reduces the customer trust, which is of utmost importance in current times. It is because users generally make choices based on reviews of a brand, product, or service available at different sources. It can impact the sales of the business in the long run as well. 

Compliance and Legal Risks 

The high chargeback ratios can lead to interference from regulatory bodies and card networks. It is more damaging when dealing with cross-border transactions. The chargeback frauds here may lead to legal disputes, compliance scrutiny, and high-risk classification. Financial penalties and fees may also follow, impacting the businesses to a significant extent. 

Employee Morale and Productivity 

Constant disputes and customer escalations can stress teams, specifically the support and finance departments. The pressure of handling disputes, preparing evidence, and managing angry customer escalations creates a stressful work environment. It may subsequently result in poor overall service quality and turnover. 

Methods to Prevent Chargeback Fraud

Preventing chargeback fraud is possible through dedicated measures: 

Upgrade the Quality of Customer Service 

It means being readily available to offer information or help before the customer makes a purchase. It ensures all their queries are resolved and they make an informed decision. It will decrease the likelihood of receiving a poor-quality product or service. 

Clearly Communicate Return and Refund Policy

Detailed clarification about the possible returns and refunds is essential. It means ensuring that the policy is concise, readable, and easily accessible to the customers. The proper communication in this regard will further help them to know what route to follow after receiving the product or service. 

Maintain Proper Transaction Records 

Companies must have proper storage and quick access to overall customer information. Specially the details about successful and failed transactions, tracking details, customer messages, and other relevant information. These will be helpful during chargeback conversations. 

Ensure Strong Payment Verification and Security 

Implement strong protocols for overall payment procedures. There are multiple available measures for payment authentication. Incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) further upgrades the security. 

A few common steps to take include implementation of 3D Secure 2.0, tokenization, Card Verification Value (CVV) and Address Verification Service (AVS), Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), and SSL encryption. 

Analyse Potential Risks 

Use effective tools to analyse the users and identify the high-risk customers. Some of the necessary analyses to include in company protocols include email intelligence, domain analysis, phone number analysis, and carrier analysis. Further, risky connections can be recognized by IP, ISP, and proxy detection. 

Conclusion 

Chargeback fraud causes a financial loss to the business while damaging its reputation. It makes an impact through a variety of ways, such as additional operational expenses, loss of inventory, increased fees and penalties, and even regulatory bodies’ involvement. 

Taking proactive measures is essential to prevent these impacts and protect the business from falling into a negative light in the market. Take the necessary steps and be proactive to avoid such a loss.
