Gambling in Virginia Beach

Legal Options and Nearby Casinos

Virginia Beach, located on the southeastern coast of Virginia, is a popular tourist destination known for its expansive beaches, festivals, and lively parks. Recently, gambling has also started to attract the attention of visitors.

Though it wasn’t always legal, changes in the law have opened opportunities for those interested in games of chance. Many websites now provide a promotion where players can claim 500% casino bonus, making it more enticing for new players to get started.

The Legal Status of Gambling in Virginia Beach

For many years, gambling in Virginia was restricted, with commercial casinos entirely banned due to perceived moral risks. This stance only began to change in 1988 when the Virginia Lottery was established. It wasn’t until 2020 that significant progress was made, as the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 4, allowing the operation of casinos in certain parts of the state.

Although five cities were approved to open physical casinos, Bristol, Danville, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Richmond-Virginia Beach were omitted. As a result, residents and tourists have had to explore other options to participate in gambling activities.

In recent years, online platforms have become a popular alternative for players in the region. Many prefer using secure payment solutions such as the Betwinner e wallet, which provides a convenient and fast way to deposit and withdraw funds while ensuring privacy and reliability for all types of gaming enthusiasts.

Online Casinos and Skill Games

Since Virginia Beach does not have physical casinos, many residents have turned to online casinos. These websites offer a range of gambling options, from slot machines to table games, often featuring attractive incentives such as free spins and low minimum deposits. Many platforms allow gamblers to deposit as little as £5 and offer numerous bonuses to retain player loyalty.

Skill Games have also played a role in Virginia Beach’s gambling landscape. These are essentially slot-like machines that require a certain degree of skill, allowing operators to argue that they do not fall under traditional gambling regulations. At one point, more than 10,000 Skill Games machines were installed in locations such as bars, gas stations, and shopping malls throughout Virginia, generating over £1 million annually in Virginia Beach alone. However, with the legalization of casinos, Skill Games were eventually deemed illegal by the state.

Penalties for Illegal Gambling

Players need to understand the penalties associated with unauthorized gambling in Virginia Beach. Gambling on activities like horse racing without proper authorization is classified as a Class 3 misdemeanour, carrying a fine of up to £500. Unlicensed gambling can result in a Class 1 misdemeanour, which may lead to up to 12 months in jail and/or fines up to £2500.

Operating an unlicensed casino for 30 days or making £2000 in daily revenue is considered a felony. This makes the consequences of running unauthorized gambling activities much more severe, deterring unregulated operations.

Cities Approved for Casinos in Virginia

The five cities in Virginia allowed to host casinos are:

  • Bristol
  • Danville
  • Norfolk
  • Portsmouth
  • Richmond

These cities are expected to generate significant revenue from gambling. For instance, the newly opened Portsmouth Casino generated nearly £24 million in revenue in its first month of operation. Such success suggests that expanding gambling facilities across the state could bring numerous economic benefits, including financing for public services like education and healthcare.

City Casino Name Opening Year Estimated Revenue (£)
Bristol Bristol Casino 2023 10 Million (Est.)
Danville Caesars Virginia 2023 15 Million (Est.)
Norfolk Norfolk Resort 2024 18 Million (Est.)
Portsmouth Rivers Casino 2023 24 Million
Richmond Richmond Casino 2024 20 Million (Est.)

These casinos will boost economic activities in their respective cities, helping the state of Virginia create new employment opportunities and increase tax revenues.

Gambling from Home in Virginia Beach

While physical casinos are not yet available in Virginia Beach, residents can legally gamble from home through online casinos. There are no laws prohibiting residents from playing casino games in their homes, as long as no fees are charged to participants and no commissions are taken from any winnings.

Many players use offshore online casinos to gamble. These platforms offer all the perks of a physical casino and often provide extra bonuses such as low deposits and hundreds of games to choose from, including poker, blackjack, and slots. With starting deposits as low as £5, many people see online gambling as a low-risk way to enjoy games from the comfort of their home.
