Every summer, a high-profile gathering of CEOs, billionaire investors, academic leaders, and politicians takes place at Allen & Co.’s prestigious Sun Valley Conference in Idaho. Often dubbed a “summer camp for billionaires,” this private event, closed to the press since its inception in 1983, is a hotbed for influential deals and discussions.
Notable past events include Jeff Bezos negotiating the purchase of the Washington Post in 2013 and Disney and ABC executives discussing their merger in 1995.
The 2024 Sun Valley Conference promises an impressive lineup of attendees. According to Variety, the guest list includes:
However, one notable figure will be absent from this year’s event.
Warren Buffett, the 94-year-old chairman of Berkshire Hathaway and the “Oracle of Omaha,” will not be attending the Sun Valley Conference this year. Instead, he is sending his protégé and likely successor, Greg Abel, Berkshire’s vice chairman of non-insurance businesses.
Buffett’s absence marks a significant shift, as he has been a regular attendee since the 1980s. The Sun Valley Lodge, where the event is held, is famous for its luxurious amenities, including fly-fishing and horseback riding, and was a favorite retreat of Ernest Hemingway.
Buffett’s decision to skip the event can be seen as part of his gradual transition of responsibilities to Abel, especially in the wake of Charlie Munger’s death last November.
At Berkshire’s annual shareholder meeting this year, Buffett expressed his confidence in Abel and Ajit Jain, who oversees Berkshire’s insurance businesses, stating, “I don’t really do much and I don’t operate at the same level of efficiency that I would have 30 years ago or 40 years ago…when you’ve got somebody like Greg [Abel] and Ajit [Jain], why settle for me? It has worked out extremely well.”
Despite questions about Abel’s investment acumen since his designation as Buffett’s successor in 2021, Buffett assured shareholders of Abel’s capability, particularly in capital allocation.
Another significant absentee is Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Musk, who delivered a keynote address at Sun Valley in 2022, will not be attending this year. His absence is less surprising given his recent trend of fewer public appearances and interviews, preferring to communicate via X (formerly Twitter).
In 2022, Musk’s refusal to answer questions about his then-ongoing Twitter acquisition during a follow-up panel left attendees wanting more. This stands in contrast to his more media-engaged past, such as in 2015 when he addressed the media following a SpaceX rocket explosion.
The Sun Valley Conference remains a pivotal event where significant business decisions and deals are often initiated. The absence of stalwarts like Buffett and Musk this year may shift dynamics, but the presence of other industry titans ensures that the conference will continue to influence global business landscapes.
