Top 10 Retirement Destinations in the U.S

When considering retirement destinations, most Americans often turn to warm locales like Florida. However, a recent U.S. News and World Report ranking has shifted the spotlight to a surprising contender: Pennsylvania.

In an analysis of 150 populous metropolitan areas, Pennsylvania emerged as a dominant force, claiming seven spots out of the top 10 best places to retire in the United States. Surprisingly, Florida only secured a single position in this coveted list.

This comprehensive report assessed various factors crucial for retirees across six categories:

  1. Affordability index
  2. Happiness index
  3. Healthcare quality index
  4. Retiree taxes index
  5. Desirability index
  6. Job market index

Drawing insights from 3,500 individuals aged 45 and above nationwide, the report highlighted notable cities for retirement.

The top 10 best places to retire in the U.S. for 2024 are:

  1. Harrisburg, Penn.
  2. Reading, Penn.
  3. Lancaster, Penn.
  4. Scranton, Penn.
  5. Allentown, Penn.
  6. New York City
  7. York, Penn.
  8. Daytona Beach, Fla.
  9. Youngstown, Ohio
  10. Pittsburgh, Penn.

Topping the charts as the premier retirement destination in the U.S. for 2024 is Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This vibrant city, nestled conveniently within a few hours’ drive from major metropolises like New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., offers retirees an enticing blend of affordability and proximity to urban centers. Despite being marginally higher than the national average, Harrisburg boasts a lower cost of living compared to many East Coast cities.

According to recent statistics, the average home value in Harrisburg stands at $230,687, reflecting a 7.8% increase over the past year.

Securing the second position is Reading, Pennsylvania, famously known for housing the real-life Reading Railroad from the Monopoly board game. This city, within easy reach of Philadelphia, Lancaster, and Amish country, holds a unique charm for retirees. Although the cost of living in Reading is slightly above state and national averages, housing costs remain more affordable, with houses priced at an average of $175,000 and apartments renting for $1,688.

Lancaster, Pennsylvania, rounds up the top three retirement destinations. Renowned for its ties to Pennsylvania Dutch Country and the Amish community, Lancaster has seen a 10.4% surge in home prices, with a median home price of $275,000.

Pennsylvania’s dominance in the top three retirement spots underscores its retiree-friendly environment. Despite relatively higher property tax rates, the state boasts one of the nation’s 20 lowest total sales tax rates, making it an attractive option for retirees. Additionally, Pennsylvania exempts social security income, retirement account withdrawals, and pension income from taxation, enhancing its appeal as a retirement haven.

This recognition positions Pennsylvania as a promising destination for those seeking an enriching and affordable retirement experience.
