As New Yorkers have fled the city to seek refuge in the East End, the Hamptons has become a year long destination rather than just a posh summer retreat. Understanding New Yorker’s aesthetic for fine dining and hot spots, this summer Ian Duke and partner David Hilty, the restaurateurs behind the popular Southampton Social Club and Union Burger Bar, have opened Union Steak and Sushi- a modern take on the quintessential steakhouse.
Since its opening Union Sushi & Steak has become Southampton’s hottest destination that offers delicious fare in a relaxed and casually elegant atmosphere. Located in the historic and quaint Bowden Square, the outdoor dining area houses the more casual Union Burger Bar and the adjacent indoor restaurant, Union Sushi & Steak manages to fuse the energy of a supper club from the days of old with a modern ambiance. The cuisine was created by award-winning Chef’s Scott Kampf and Marc Fasciana of varied fame and tenures. The delectable menu features dry aged steaks that are courtesy of Niman Ranch in Colorado enhanced by optional toppings such as gorgonzola or truffled mushroom ragu. Try the assorted fresh sushi and sashimi menu that offers unique combinations of classic rolls and cuts. Choose from classic to unique signature rolls that offer sublime combinations such as lobster and avocado topped with marinated skirt steak or the spicy shrimp and avocado roll with jalapeno and topped with habanero and buffalo sauces. Starters range from Asian inspired delicacies such as a spicy mayo and tuna ponzu tower, duck egg rolls, or hoisin bao buns. Be sure to leave room for a tempting dessert such as the warm apple tartlet with salted caramel ice cream or chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream.
“We created Union Sushi & Steak because it’s what the people of Southampton are asking for,” Duke said. “Southampton has no year-round sushi restaurants and there is not a dedicated steakhouse. Right now, it’s a trek for a REAL roll-up-your-sleeves steakhouse dining experience.”
Meanwhile, Duke’s award-winning burgers and fries spot, Union Burger Bar will continue to serve up American comfort food in the adjacent space.
As with the Southampton Social club, Union Sushi & Steak has that “Supper Club” experience with ambient lighting, live music, a sexy vibe, potent cocktails, and an extensive wine list. Their creative cocktail menu offers potent elixirs such as a cucumber sake gin martini, jalapeno infused watermelon tequila cooler, dirty martini with bleu cheese stuffed olives or a prickly pear mezcal margarita.
Ian Duke is also excited about his other all new dining venture, The Baylander. The World’s Smallest Aircraft Carrier, The Baylander has now docked on the West Harlem Piers at 125th Street and is on active duty as a riverfront bar and restaurant crewed by Ian Duke’s team from Prohibition, Union Sushi & Steak and Union Burger Bar. Open Tuesday – Friday from 3-10 pm and Saturday & Sundays from 1:30 – 10:30 pm, Baylander Steel Beach offers the perfect escape from the summer heat of the City to enjoy food and cocktails at the waterfront.
