Picasso’s ‘Golden Muse’ Portrait Fetches Record-breaking $121m

In a historic art auction at Sotheby’s, a 1932 masterpiece by Pablo Picasso, titled “Femme a la Montre” (Woman with a Watch), has achieved a remarkable sale of $139 million (£113 million). This sale not only marks the second-highest price ever achieved for the iconic artist but also stands as the most valuable work sold at auction this year.

The portrait features Marie-Therese Walter, a French model, and former lover of Picasso, portraying her in a throne-like chair against a captivating blue background. The painting had a pre-auction valuation of $120 million, surpassing expectations and contributing to its record-breaking sale.

The “golden muse” of Picasso, Marie-Therese Walter, met the artist in Paris at the age of 17, beginning a clandestine relationship while Picasso was still married to Ukrainian ballerina Olga Khokhlova. Walter became a prominent subject for Picasso’s works, including the 1932 masterpiece and the 2022 auction hit, “Femme Nue Couchee” (Nude Reclining Woman), which sold for $67.5 million.

Previously owned by art collector Emily Fisher Landau since 1968, “Femme a la Montre” has found a new home with an anonymous buyer, solidifying its status as a coveted masterpiece in the art world.

Pablo Picasso, born in Malaga in 1881 and later establishing himself as a prominent figure in the art scene after moving to Paris in 1904, left an indelible mark on the 20th century. His groundbreaking experimentation with styles, notably “Cubism,” and the creation of around 150,000 pieces over eight decades define his prolific career.

While Picasso’s artistic legacy remains unquestionable, recent years have seen scrutiny over his personal behavior, with allegations of cruelty, womanizing, and coercive conduct. Despite the controversies, Picasso’s impact on the art world endures, as evidenced by the record-breaking sale of “Femme a la Montre.” ImpactWealth.Org celebrates this momentous event in the art world, recognizing the continued significance of Picasso’s contributions to global culture.
