In a groundbreaking move, Humane, the AI startup founded by former Apple designers Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, has unveiled its debut product — the Humane AI Pin. Priced at $699, this innovative device aims to redefine the way we interact with technology, serving as a smartphone replacement with a range of cutting-edge features.
The Humane AI Pin allows users to make calls, send texts, and access information through voice commands. Sporting a laser display, it transforms the palm into a mini screen, capable of displaying the time, date, or nearby points of interest. Unlike traditional smartphones, the AI Pin operates without constant surveillance, activating only when engaged through voice, touch, gesture, or the laser ink display.
One of the distinguishing features of the AI Pin is its independence from a smartphone. With no tethering to a mobile device, users can enjoy a separate phone number, providing a unique level of autonomy. However, a $24 monthly data subscription to T-Mobile is required in addition to the upfront device cost.
Humane’s journey gained attention earlier this year with a remarkable $100 million financing round involving Microsoft, LG’s venture arm, and Tiger Global, even before any product was officially announced. The company’s total funding has now surpassed $200 million, with notable contributions from industry leaders such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff.
Starting November 16, Humane will begin accepting orders for the AI Pin, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of wearable AI technology.
Powered by a Qualcomm chipset, the AI Pin boasts features like a built-in speaker and camera, with visual indicators signaling when these functions are active. The device’s web app allows users to view photos and videos captured by double-tapping the pin.
In a demonstration video, Chaudhri and Bongiorno showcased the device’s capabilities, emphasizing its real-time translation feature for spoken conversations between Spanish and English. The AI Pin also offers access to AI services from major providers like Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI, enabling users to ask questions, play music, and receive information without relying on downloaded apps.
Humane’s AI assistant further enhances user experience by summarizing daily calendars, messages, and health data. Whether inquiring about nutritional information or requesting music from famous sci-fi films, the AI Pin is designed to cater to diverse user needs.
