Ferrari 296 GTS Hybrid Review: When discussing the Ferrari 296 GTS, it’s crucial not to underestimate this stunning vehicle simply because it features a V-6 hybrid engine. Priced at $366,139, this Ferrari masterpiece might not have the traditional 8- or 12-cylinder engines that have defined the brand’s legacy, but it more than makes up for it with its performance and design. As the saying goes, “Ferrari doesn’t make cars; Ferrari makes engines,” and the 296 GTS is no exception, despite its smaller engine size.
Ferrari’s history with V-6 engines dates back to the 1970s, although those models were branded as “Dino” and not officially recognized as Ferraris. Named after Enzo Ferrari’s late son, these V-6 models were intended as an entry-level brand. However, Ferrari is now embracing the shift towards hybrid and electric vehicles, leading to the creation of the 296 GTS. This open-air version of the Ferrari 296 GTB plug-in hybrid follows in the footsteps of the LaFerrari mild hybrid, introduced in 2013.
I had the opportunity to test drive the Ferrari 296 GTS around Miami, navigating through South Beach, the Design District, and over the Rickenbacker Causeway. The drive coincided with the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix and Ferrari’s celebration of 70 years of US sales. The weekend was packed with Ferrari events, including the unveiling of new 12-cylinder sports cars. Amidst this excitement, the 296 GTS stood out for its unique features and driving experience.
The Ferrari 296 GTS is a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive marvel, delivering 819 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque. It offers a modest seven miles of all-electric range and achieves 47 MPGe in combined driving. The car’s smooth eight-speed transmission and exceptional handling allow it to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.9 seconds, reaching a top speed of 205 mph.
Visually, the 296 GTS is a showstopper. The Blu Corsa model I drove highlighted its striking design, especially the rear buttresses, making it look as stunning with the roof up as with it down. The convertible roof can be retracted in just 14 seconds at speeds up to 28 mph. This Ferrari’s design transcends fashion, embodying timeless style and sophistication.
What truly sets the 296 GTS apart is how it manages its immense power with elegance. The hybrid engine shines in urban settings, offering a quiet, all-electric mode perfect for cruising through pedestrian areas without disturbing the peace. On open roads and bridges, the car’s full power is unleashed, providing a thrilling driving experience that feels almost like flying. The challenge was adhering to speed limits, given the car’s exhilarating performance.
Despite its many strengths, the Ferrari 296 GTS has a few drawbacks. The infotainment system is notably frustrating, featuring a small haptic touchscreen on the steering wheel for basic functions like radio controls. This setup often required assistance from a passenger using a separate control screen, complicating tasks like adjusting the climate or syncing a phone. Additionally, the footbox is cramped for drivers with longer legs or larger feet, which might be uncomfortable on longer drives.
Ferrari’s allure lies not just in performance but in the entire driving experience. The 296 GTS is a testament to why Ferrari’s order books are filled years in advance, despite the high prices. These cars offer unparalleled driving pleasure and aesthetics, making them worth the investment. The 296 GTS, with its V-6 hybrid engine, upholds this tradition by delivering excitement and beauty in spades.
For those still skeptical about the Ferrari 296 GTS’s V-6 hybrid engine, the proof lies in the driving experience. Spend a day behind the wheel, and the appreciative glances from onlookers and the sheer joy of driving will likely dispel any doubts. The 296 GTS is a Ferrari through and through, regardless of what’s under the hood.
