Kindness took center stage on October 9, 2025, as the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) hosted its annual Humane Awards Luncheon at the iconic Plaza Hotel in New York City. The event brought together animal lovers, philanthropists, and public figures to celebrate both people and pets who have gone above and beyond to make the world a better place for animals serving a delicious vegan lunch.
The afternoon began with a heartfelt welcome from NBC anchor Chuck Scarborough, who shared personal stories about his own pets before reminding guests that “we all have the power to be heroes for animals in need.”
ASPCA President and CEO Matt Bershadker then shared moving stories about two rescue dogs, Rockstar and Maeve, whose recoveries symbolize the ASPCA’s mission of hope and healing. “No animal should ever be denied the fresh start they deserve,” he told the audience.
From there, the spotlight turned to this year’s honorees — an inspiring group whose compassion has touched countless lives.
Two-time Super Bowl champion and NFL analyst Logan Ryan was honored for his long-standing commitment to animal welfare. Together with his wife Ashley, Ryan co-founded the Ryan Animal Rescue Foundation (RARF), which provides grants and support to animal shelters across the country.
“I get the award, but my wife is the real hero for dedicating her life to animals,” Ryan said with a smile. “I’m proud to stand here as a Black man in this space, breaking stereotypes and showing what leadership through compassion looks like.”
Since launching RARF, the Ryans have fostered dozens of kittens, adopted multiple dogs, and even inspired NFL teammates like Tom Brady to volunteer at shelters.
Only eight years old, Zayin Berry from Yuma, Arizona, showed extraordinary bravery when he stopped a group of kids from harming a kitten — offering his own skateboard in exchange for the tiny animal’s life. With help from his mother, the kitten, named Peaches, received lifesaving care and found a forever home.
“Saving a life is more important than toys and skateboards,” Zayin said, winning over every heart in the room.
Better known as @wolfgang2242 to his 1.2 million Instagram followers, Steve Greig has dedicated his life to caring for senior pets who are often overlooked in shelters. Over 14 years, the retired accountant has adopted more than 40 senior dogs — many with health challenges — and given them a loving home filled with warmth and humor.
“Once you get to know these old souls, you can’t help but fall in love,” Greig shared. “They still have so much life to give.”
Lieutenant Ron Dadabo accepted this year’s Henry Bergh Award on behalf of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division’s Dogfighting Unit, which has rescued over 500 dogs and made more than 100 arrests since 2023.
“It’s an honor to stand here on behalf of everyone fighting this crime,” said Dadabo. “With the ASPCA’s partnership, we’re saving lives and giving these dogs a second chance.”
Few moments were as emotional as when Michele Pich accepted the Dogs of the Year Award for her late pit bull, Vivian Peyton, and her current therapy dog, Ralphie.
Once a victim of dogfighting, Vivian became a beloved therapy dog who comforted terminally ill children and grieving families. Ralphie now carries on her legacy as the “Associate DOGrector” of Rowan University’s pet therapy program.
“Vivian had every reason not to trust people,” Michele said tearfully, “but she chose love anyway.”
The afternoon drew a distinguished crowd of philanthropists and society figures, including Aerin Lauder, Ramona Singer, Muffie Potter Aston, Renee Rockefeller, Arriana and Dixon Boardman, Paul Arnhold, and Jill Rappaport, all gathered to celebrate compassion and community.
As guests mingled over lunch and applause filled the ballroom, one thing was clear: kindness is powerful. Each honoree’s story was a reminder that small acts of love — whether rescuing one animal or inspiring others to adopt — can ripple out and change the world.
