The acclaimed chef and restaurateur Michael Mina marks his highly anticipated debut in New York City with the opening of Bourbon Steak New York. Located inside the JW Marriott Essex House at 160 Central Park South, this reimagined modern American steakhouse promises to deliver an unparalleled dining experience with its premium beef, seafood, and seasonal ingredients sourced from local farmers and purveyors.
Chef Michael Mina, an Egyptian-American culinary maestro and the founder of the MINA Group, has successfully launched over 30 chef-driven concepts across the country beginning his career in San Francisco. He brings his expertise and passion to New York City, supported by Executive Chef Bryan Ogden. Chef Ogden, who honed his skills under Chef Mina and the legendary Chef Charlie Trotter, brings his extensive experience and creativity to the Bourbon Steak New York kitchen.
The menu at Bourbon Steak New York is a tribute to traditional American steakhouses, infused with Chef Mina’s unique culinary philosophy emphasizing Product, Technique, and Presentation. The dining experience begins with an impressive array of Shellfish & Caviar, served from bespoke trolley carts. Highlights include butter poached and grilled crab legs and Live Sea Urchin with aleppo pepper and lemon.
Appetizers such as Michael Mina’s signature Tuna Tartare, a dish he invented in 1991, or the cherry tomato and burrata tart set the stage for the main courses. The steak selection, curated after testing over 50 cuts, features options like the 8 oz Center-Cut Filet and the 40-Day Dry-Aged 32 oz Porterhouse. Unique Wagyu offerings include a bone-in wagyu New York strip and Japanese A5 Striploin.
For those seeking alternatives to steak, the menu offers dishes like Phyllo Crusted Dover Sole and Bourbon Steak’s renowned Maine Lobster Pot Pie. Sides like Black Truffle Mac & Cheese and “Escargot” Roasted Mushrooms complement the main courses, while showstopper desserts such as the Tower of Warm Beignets and the Valrhona Cocoa Nib Chocolate Fondue provide a sweet finale.
The beverage program, curated by MINA Group Wine Director and Master Sommelier Jeremy Shanker, features a diverse wine list with over 900 bottles from renowned regions and underrepresented areas. The cocktail menu, designed by James Beard Award-winning MINA Group Beverage Director Michael Lay, includes modern takes on classic beverages, such as the Bourbon Steak Martini and the A5 Old Fashioned, prepared tableside.
The restaurant’s interior, designed by the award-winning AvroKO in collaboration with Stonehill Taylor, pays homage to timeless American steakhouses and the Art Deco influences of the JW Marriott Essex House. The 300-seat space features mixed metals, fire-kiln ceramic tiles, and rich rust hues, creating a modern yet moody atmosphere. Greenery and planters throughout the space add a touch of balance, while the two private dining rooms, named Fulton and Chelsea, offer an intimate setting for special occasions.
