Amref Health Africa’s Annual ArtBall: Celebrating African Culture and Philanthropy in Brooklyn, NY

Brooklyn, NY – On Saturday, May 4, 2024, Amref Health Africa held its much-anticipated annual ArtBall and accompanying art auction at INDUSTRIA in Brooklyn, NY. The event served as a vibrant nexus of African culture and philanthropy, spotlighting the immense talent emanating from the African continent. Esteemed co-chairs of the event included Carmelo Anthony, along with Spike and Tonya Lewis Lee.

Among the notable guests were luminaries such as Kehinde Wiley, Lindsey Peoples, Earl Nurse, and Storm Ascher, to name a few. The event, hosted by Sahr Ngaujah, featured the presentation of the prestigious Rees Visionary Award to world-renowned artist Kehinde Wiley by Franklin Sirmans. In a touching gesture, Wiley announced a generous $700,000 donation to Amref in his acceptance speech.

The highlight of the evening was the art auction, currently live on Sothebys.com until May 6 at 12 pm EST. The auction boasts a collection of 42 pieces of Contemporary African, Pan-African, and Black Art, showcasing the works of both emerging and established artists. Curated by a team including Storm Ascher and Cierra Britton, the proceeds from the auction will support Amref’s vital healthcare initiatives across Africa.

Before the festivities commenced, an exclusive dinner and salon were held, featuring engaging discussions such as a fireside chat between Kehinde Wiley and Marc Lacey, Managing Director of the New York Times.

The culinary delights for the evening were provided by YESBABE and Amazing Graze NY, accompanied by a selection of beverages from Ten To One, iBest Wines, and more. The event was generously supported by partners including Pfizer, Open Society Foundation, and General Art Company.

A captivating live performance by Les Ballet Afrik and music by FON Sound System set the stage for an unforgettable evening, as guests danced the night away.
